April 23
This is a reminder that Tuesday (4/23) is our annual Senior Showcase event, held in the Upper Gym. As in previous years, we'll need your help to evaluate the Senior displays. This staff activity will serve as a required staff meeting, so please make sure to attend.
Couple of notes:
Evaluating the Seniors' projects is a simple process, and will be communicated to you when you arrive.
Participation among Classified staff for this event is both welcomed and appreciated.
Bring a pen.
Thanks in advance, Everyone!
Budget Message to the Community
The proposed budget that will be presented at the District Budget Committee meeting on Monday, April 22, will be reflective of:
An anticipated District-wide shortfall of $35 million for 2019-20
District-wide personnel reductions that include administrative, teacher and classified staff
A budget reduction of 15% across schools
An increase in student-teacher ratio/class sizes
Elimination of funding for PYP coordinators and PYP world language teachers (among other programs)
Reduction of elementary intervention teachers from full-time to half-time
Our classroom staffing allocation will potentially decrease by 13 teachers. This could change in the coming months as enrollment numbers settle and the budget picture becomes more clear.
We acknowledge that the principles of inquiry-based instruction, student voice, transdisciplinary learning, science, technology and global thinking are and will continue to be a great asset to our students and staff. The district will continue to work with our PYP, STEAM, EL schools to explore possibilities that allow for continued partnerships in the future.
I encourage all parents to stay informed of the BSD budget process and participate as you see fit. We are also dependent on Oregon State Legislative decisions that can either add to or detract from our funding estimates.
AP Announcement
Students who missed AP Bubbling last week must come to the make-up session on Wednesday, April 24th at 1 pm in the Student Center. Students who do not complete bubbling will not be able to take their exams
PROM
I realize it is a terrible time to ask anything of anyone, but I'm sending this out as a "just in case." Maybe someone is looking for something to do.
A few issues came up with some staff who were assigned to supervise and we are a bit short-handed with PROM next Saturday night. The venue is World of Speed in Wilsonville, and Ben assures us it is a very cool place with cars and a simulator and whatever else helps make something "cool." PROM is the easiest dance of the year to supervise, but it does still require help. If you are looking for something to do next Saturday from 8-11 pm (or even for part of that time), and if you want to know what your students look like when they dress up, please communicate with Ben.
Thanks so much!

Technology
Happy Sunday Staff! This week's newsletter brings you some more super cool information (http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18):
- Airdrop
Have you seen the Airdrop icon on your phone or Mac? It is an easy way to transfer files between Mac devices (iPhone, iPad, and Mac). It can also be super useful as a delivery method for files in the classroom. For a quick, student-friendly How-to, click here. Don’t have Airdrop on your Mac? You may have to enable it in SelfService.
- Library: Life, Legends, History, and Folktales come alive through the magic storytelling. Come to the freeArt of the Story Festival: http://bit.ly/storyfestival19 starting April 27th
- Digital Citizenship: In this episode of Crash Course Navigating Digital Information, John Green discusses how the architecture of the social internet itself tells us not to be patient - to load more tweets, to hit refresh for new posts, and to click the top search results. But just because information is new, or algorithmically determined to be most relevant to you, doesn't necessarily mean it's the best or most accurate. So today we're going to teach you some tips to exercise a little more click restraint on the Internet. Check out the tutorial here: http://bit.ly/digitalcitizenship9
- PDF Scanner
Did you know: You can use the paper feeder on the top of any copy machine in the building to scan a document and have it emailed directly to you as a pdf? Then, using a site such as https://simplypdf.com/you can convert the pdf file to a WordDoc, and Excel spreadsheet or a Powerpoint. Want to learn how? Just send me an email, and I can help you out.
- STICKERS!!! Want to have classroom signage, create a custom puzzle, or make a sticker?
I have a Silhouette Curio on loan from the district office, and we have materials to do all this and more. Check out some the images of some of the things we have created on http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18
- Have an app you love?
Make sure it does not become blocked or disabled. Send me the link so I can submit it for the new application approval process today! The earlier we get the name of your application in, the more chance we have for it getting approved sooner rather than later.
Have any tech issues, questions, lesson ideas, or concerns? Please send me an email and I can create a presentation or look into a solution for you. You can also drop by my office in the library any time. http://bit.ly/WHSstafftech18
