PRINCIPAL AND VICE PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
BSE Community,
I hope this Paw Prints finds you and your family well. On behalf of the BSE staff, we would like to thank you for making us feel special with notes and drinks and positive thoughts for Staff Appreciation Week. We are honored to be a part of such an amazing community. The support is second to none!
If you know of a family that has a child entering kindergarten next year, please give them a quick call, text or email to ask them to register their child for school. Registration can easily be completed online or if the family does not have access to the internet, packets may be picked up in front of the school every Thursday in May from 11:00-3:00 PM and on May 20th from 5:00-6:30 PM. Registering for kindergarten allows the school district an idea of how many teachers will be needed for next year. The online link for registration can be found here. Thank you!
If you have a child with a birthday in April, we are celebrating birthdays tomorrow with breakfast with the principals. This zoom meeting’s invite should have been sent to you by your child’s teacher. Our first group of birthday students is at 8:00 AM with 4th and 5th, at 8:20 we eat breakfast with 2nd and 3rd graders and at 8:40 we eat breakfast with kindergarten and 1st graders. Can’t make it? No worries! We will have a gathering next fall at school for all students missing the breakfasts. Additionally, in two weeks we will celebrate May birthdays. If your child missed either March or April celebrations, they can attend the May birthday celebration.
I know these times can be trying for parents. Having the role of parent and classroom teacher can be difficult. I have talked to several parents that are finding it difficult to have a moment to themselves let alone meaningful interactions without a struggle. Giving your child a chance to build endurance with reading to self might be a solution. Our students practice this in the classroom daily. Without libraries, students may need to read text from Bookshelf or Epic but they can still improve their reading skills even if it is reading online. Giving yourself a chance to read to self with your child is also supporting the idea of how enjoyable reading can be for everyone, including teachers/parents.
Hopefully, by now you have had a chance to see the letter from Don Grotting about the possibility of taking furlough days on Fridays. The title of the email is “2020-2021 Budget Update - May 11, 2020”. This email explains the important steps the District is taking to save money during these tough economic times. We will know more about Fridays later this week and how your child’s schedule may be affected.
It was nice to see many of you as you picked up your student belongings. Student belongings not picked up will be held for distribution in the fall. If you have an urgent need for your child’s belongings, please contact Janet Maza by email at janet_maza@beaverton.k12.or.us or Jim Hiller at jim_hiller@beaverton.k12.or.us .
Wishing you a great week!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Dear BSE Parents/Guardians,
Wait! What? Are we still doing this? Yes; yes we are. Are you getting used to this new normal? Are things getting easier on you because you have finally figured out the routine that best fits the needs of your family? I’m still working on it over here in North Portland :) They say (on average) that it takes more than 2 months (66 days) before a new behavior becomes automatic. And how long it takes the new habit to form can vary widely depending on the behavior, the person, and the circumstances. I can tell you that there are some behaviors/habits that I would like to keep when this is all over (getting outside, family activities, kid chores, routines etc.) and many that I will need to modify (staying up late, not eating as healthy as usual, allowing the extra screen time etc.) when the time comes. Since I am a “grown-up”, I know which habits are good/bad and I know that it is in my control to make these changes on my own timeline. One thing I forget on a regular basis is that my son is also trying to figure out his own “new normal”. He is not a “grown-up”. He is adjusting to new routines and developing his own habits. He has stressors and they are showing in a variety of ways (some are not so pretty). I have to remember my expectations for work completion, distractability, and attitude towards his “new teacher” can change day to day or hour by hour for that matter. Try adding multiple children into the mix. I am in awe of those who do. I want everyone to know that I admire all of you for taking on this role to help our Bonny Slope students succeed and stay engaged. You are rocking it! If there are days that you just can’t, then don’t. We totally understand. If you need help, please reach out. We are still here for you.

Safe Routes to School
Dear Bonny Slope Parents and Guardians,
It’s data collection time again for Beaverton’s Safe Routes to School program. The purpose of this program is to make walking and biking to school safe, convenient and fun.
Parent’s and guardian’s input into how students travel to and from schools and their impression of the safety of the route is valuable as the city and county prioritize needed improvements for our roads. The following link was generated from the National Safe Routes to School Center and will be used to give us a good picture of how students are getting to and from schools throughout the district.
The school’s survey will be open for responses until May 31.
We appreciate your help in giving us information to make our program effective for all Beaverton School District students.
