What's Happening at Penngrove?
AND...
Our much anticipated painted rock river was laid out by our lovely 6th graders, come and check it out!
REMINDER: Adults should never use student bathrooms while on campus!!!!
Can we play on playgrounds after school?
Jog-a-thon is coming on Friday, September 7th!!!! YESSSSSS!!!!!
Our Jog-a-thon relies on coordination from staff, teachers and volunteers to make the busy day run smooth! This year we are dividing volunteer shifts into 30 minute slots allowing everyone time to cheer on their students. We recommend for you to volunteer before and after your student is on the track. Grade level track times are listed in the Station 3 column on the chart in the linked document.
Although the sign-up sheet is long, it will help us stay organized and allow students to feel supported during the event. Our goal is to have 10 volunteers from each grade level! SIGN-UP LINK IS HERE! However you are able to help, we THANK YOU!
We encourage parents to cheer students on while walking/jogging the track. Hold up handmade signs, blow bubbles, shake pom-poms, spray water...anything to keep up the motivation! The cheering section is anywhere in the grass around the track and we will have chairs set-up in the shade for spectators.
Here is the link to donate online via PayPal. Please share this link with friends and family far and wide!

PE and Penngrove in Motion Update from Coach K
PE is off to a great start this year! During week one our younger students walked, skipped and danced their way through activities designed to show them how we do PE while the older students completed a team challenge/what do you remember ‘quiz.’ We talked about trying our hardest even when the day’s activity isn’t our favorite and how we can apply the golden rule to PE. This month our life skill is respect and I anticipate many conversations about how to respect teammates, equipment and our shared learning spaces. The kids have done an awesome job working through the heat and remembering to wear comfy clothes and shoes.
Penngrove in Motion (PIM) also started off with a bang— and some fun beats! PIM is part of our PE time each week so the kids are expected to get their heart rates up even if they don’t like to dance; walking or jogging in place is always an acceptable substitute. With that said, dancing is an excellent way to fire up your brain activity while improving your balance, core strength and cardiovascular fitness, and we strongly encourage parents not to stand and watch but to get out there and shake a leg with the students. The kids love it and no doubt you’ll produce a few endorphins before heading out.
Supporting the Penngrove Library
Dear Families of Penngrove School,
Once again, we would like to invite you to purchase a Junior Library Guild subscription for our library in honor of your child(ren). A bookplate will go inside each book with your students name and date. Your child(ren) will be the first to check out these special books. Please click this link for more info: https://www.juniorlibraryguild.com/jlgcategories/index?type=4&squery=&library[]=elementary
We will send home a half sheet next week for you to fill out which category you would like for your family's choice. For each added category this year the library will get 12 free books from Junior Library Guild.
Thank you for your consideration and your support of our school library. We are changing the lives of our children for the best one book at a time!!
From Mrs. Lutz in the Library
Mrs. Lutz would like students to have as many library books as they need. Because of our limited time during class visits, they will be checking out 1 or 2 books at that time. Please stop by any time (schedule is posted on the door) to check out more books with your kids. The Library is closed on Mondays. Thanks!!
Lawrence Hall of Science Assembly
Thank you to all of the parent volunteers who made this day a success, we couldn't do this without you! School assemblies are funded through the Penngrove Jog-a-thon through the PTA, thank you FOPPTA!
Message from Outdoor Education, Class of 2019
We hosted a fundraiser yesterday (Wednesday, August 15) from 4-8pm at Rebounderz in Rohnert Park. Thank you to all of you who came down and jumped for 4 hours!
Our next Dine and Donate is Wednesday, August 22 at Brewster's in Petaluma. Come on down and enjoy a beverage and a meal. This indoor/outdoor restaurant is kid and dog friendly. 15% of your bill will help send our current 6th graders to camp!
Thank you for continuing to support Outdoor Education!

One of the programs supported through PTA, is to provide one field trip bus per classroom per year. This saves parents from driving, allows us to schedule more trips and provides a fun experience for our students.
As always, thank you for supporting our school!
An update from Penn STEM!
Welcome to another year full of hands-on projects and activities in our Penn STEM program! In case you don’t know me, I’m Adrienne Olufs and I’m the STEM Coach for our school. I get to go into every classroom and work with every student! Our projects and activities range from grade level specific to school-wide. We focus work on fostering a growth mindset, flexible thinking, and the engineering design process in a project-based learning environment.
We started our work in grades 2-6 with a mini-challenge where students were asked to engineer and create a self-propelled “vehicle” using a given set of materials. We discussed challenges and failure points with suggestions for improvement for next time.
Our first project is a school-wide cardboard challenge, inspired by Caine’s Arcade. This is our third year with this project and students are very excited! In each class, students have started their design process by brainstorming the characteristics of what they consider a great arcade game. They are now working on a detailed sketch (or blueprint) of what their game will look like. Future design plans include sourcing supplies, writing instructions, and much more!
We’re asking students to bring their own box and materials needed to build their arcade game. We will have duct tape on hand and stations where students can get help from adults with any cutting that they need done. In a few weeks, we’ll send home the official list of supplies that your student needs to create their specific arcade game but please talk with your child about their ideas to start gathering supplies ahead of time if you can. Sometimes finding the right materials can be inspirational!
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Our community build and play day is Friday September 21st. You’ll soon find an official invitation to this school-wide event in your child’s Wednesday folder. We’ll also send the volunteer sign-up link in the next Penngrove Press. If you have a sheetrock knife, power tool, or something that YOU can bring to use at our “cutting station”, we encourage you to sign up!
Look for more info about this day as we get closer. In the meantime, talk with your child about supplies that you can gather for their arcade game and sign up if you can help out. Thank you!
