Back to work!!...
Fundations: phonics, reading and writing instruction
This week's letters/sounds are: y-yellow-/y/ and x-fox-/x/. After this week we will only have two more letters left: z and q. Once children have mastered letters/sounds then they can build/read words, and the fun really begins!
We continue to work on hearing/identifying the end sounds of a word. When your child decodes an unknown word in their levelled reader by cross-checking the picture with a first sound of a word, get them to check the ending sound in print vs. what they hear.
Now that we are beginning to write sentences, we are also learning about punctuation. At this point we have only learned about the question mark, and the period.
Writing
We will be editing our Science writing, and fancying it up for our Friday afternoon celebration with our writing buddies.
We will also be writing some class books together, before returning to our story writing at the end of the week.
Math
Our new unit on counting and measurement begins this week.
Reading
We will discover this week that we are "SuperReaders", with "Pointer Power"!! Make sure that your child is using this power when they are reading to you each night. We will be reading a lot of poems/nursery rhymes/class books/leveled readers (individual to your child) during Reader's Workshop.
I will also be assessing a lot of the class' reading level/phonemic awareness skills. I've been blown away by how much growth I've seen since the beginning of Kindergarten. Keep up the great work at home!
Leader In Me
Continuing the theme of the importance of our physical environment on our psyche, we will be creating some wall displays for our classroom. Also, your child will be bringing something home that they've made to inspire them.
