Spring Update from School Committee

We hope you enjoy this Spring update. We have been busy since our last newsletter and want to bring you up to speed on the past few months of activity and give you a preview of the next few months to come, with our new Superintendent transitioning to her position here in Franklin.

POLICY Subcommittee Update: HOMEWORK POLICY REVISION
As part of the Franklin School Committee’s ongoing review of its policies, the Policy Subcommittee is considering changes to its Homework Policy. In order to inform their decision making, it is important to solicit feedback from parents and community regarding the language of the proposed policy. The Policy Subcommittee of the Franklin School Committee will host a parent/community forum for the purposes of soliciting feedback regarding the proposed policy.
Parent or community members interested in providing feedback may attend an open meeting from 7:00-8:00 PM on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 in the Training Room on the 3rd Floor of the Franklin Municipal Building located at 355 East Central Street in Franklin.
For parents who wish to provide feedback but are unable to attend the meeting during this busy time of year, we are providing a survey option will remain open until June 6.

PROPOSED HOMEWORK POLICY
The Franklin Public Schools recognize the value of purposeful homework in reinforcing and extending learning and providing families an opportunity to better understand the academic work of their child.
Professional staff are charged with:
- Developing meaningful and relevant homework assignments that are aligned with work in the classroom
- Clearly explaining the purpose and educational objective of each assignment and identifying the expectations for learning outcomes
- Ensuring that homework assignments suit the needs of individual learners by providing work that is developmentally appropriate and personalized as needed
- Determining the appropriate amount and frequency of homework
- Providing feedback to students on homework that is intended to improve student learning
Professional staff in grades 6-12 are encouraged to consult with each other regarding planning of homework and projects to ensure the workload is manageable for students.
Homework should be only used as a learning tool, may not be used for punishment, and students should not lose privileges, including recess, for not completing homework.
