A Message From Mrs. Ford
Our Parent Group has played an integral part of making our school a wonderful place to be and learn. Some activities that are being planned at this very moment are the infamous Grandparent Bingo Night, the Daddy/Daughter Dance, the Mother/Son Bowling, and an end-of-the-year cookout for our students. They are a very hard working, behind-the-scenes group who do much for this school. I can't thank them enough! We are also hoping to have our new officers up and running before the beginning of next year. Most all of our officers will be leaving us, and Dummer is in need of volunteers who would be willing to take on this endeavor. We will have an informational meeting on April 11 at 6:30 p.m. in our Multi-Purpose Room inside of Dummer School for anyone who would like to learn more about us or who may just want to check it out. If you are unable to attend this meeting but think you may be interested in being a part of our Parent Group, please email Lynette Ford at lford@kidsroe.org or call our office at (815) 786-8498. We would LOVE to have you!
This has been a wonderful year with great students, a phenomenal staff, and incredibly supportive parents/guardians. Thank you all for making Herman E. Dummer a remarkable place to be. I hope everyone has an enjoyable, yet restful, spring break surrounded by family and loved ones. Yikes, only a little more than two months to go!
Sincerely,
Lynette Ford

FANTASTIC 4TH GRADE
Throughout the month of March almost all of the 4th grade enjoyed seeing the process of incubating baby chicks! Our classrooms are full of springtime chirping! All students began the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) in English/Language Arts.
Present...
With 2 weeks of the fourth quarter already behind us, we have no signs of slowing down until the last day of school! April is going to be a busy month for our 4th graders. In Reading, students can look forward to continuing to summarize, finding the main idea, discovering text structure, and author's purpose. In Math, Geometry will continue to dominate. In Social Studies, many classes will be continuing to study the various regions that make up the United States while also looking at Civil Rights events and key figures. In Science, we will be visiting a local beef cattle farm on April 21st and continuing to look at a variety of topics: soil, rocks, waves, energy, and STEM activities.
Future...
PARCC testing will continue through the third week of April finishing our ELA testing and beginning our Math tests. We will be going to the Museum of Science and Industry on Wednesday April 26th! It is a free museum day for our students and we are looking forward to another exciting year! Fundraising will continue for our St. Baldrick's event on May 25th.
FABULOUS 5TH GRADE
When we return from spring break, we will continue with two more weeks of PARCC testing in Math and English/Language Arts. The fifth grade students will also be taking a PARCC Science test. So far, the students have been working diligently on their tests and we hope this continues after break.
Over the next month, our curriculum will include the topics of converting measurements, interpreting data, algebra, graphing points on coordinate planes and geometric measurement in Math. We will continue to work on research papers in Writing. Language Arts (Grammar) will include demonstrating a command of the conventions, expanding/combining/reducing sentences for meaning, and working on more figurative language. Classrooms will switch to their 4th quarter Science kits. Social Studies will move from Westward Expansion to the Civil War. In Reading, we will continue working on quoting accurately, drawing information from multiple print and digital sources, and continuing working with the strategies of determining meaning and tone of literature.
We are wishing everyone a wonderful spring break, with time to relax and reconnect with family. See you in April.
