Superintendent's Message
Dear BUSD Families,
Happy holidays, from the Byron Union School District to all our students, families, and staff!
As we reflect on 2021’s memorable achievements and unprecedented challenges, we find ourselves more grateful than ever to work with this extraordinary community. We continue to look forward to a new year of serving Byron’s children.
I want to thank every one of our students and staff members for their commitment, and attentiveness to our learning environment. I also want to thank every family for the commitment, and support that you provide.
It is now time to take a well-deserved break. I hope you get the chance to relax and spend time with your family and friends and come back excited about 2022! I wish each of you Joyful Holidays and a Happy New Year!
Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Superintendent.
With BUSD pride,
Reyes Gauna, Ed.D., Superintendent

SCHOOL NEWS
Timber Point Elementary
The Wolf Pack is wonderful here at Timber Point! With the holidays coming up soon there is excitement in the air. All students and staff received a special treat from myself and Wolfie. This week the students had a surprise classroom visit from Santa and Wolfie. I loved seeing the joy on their faces!

Discovery Bay Elementary
Discovery Bay Elementary completed our second round of MAP assessments prior to Thanksgiving Break. As a school site, the growth we observed from the first round to the second round has been AMAZING! We took some time out to celebrate our 4th grade students who achieved and far surpassed their MAP growth targets as a grade level. Their classroom teachers had given them a challenge to “Hit a Grand Slam” on their MAP tests. If the grade level won the challenge, their teachers and Mrs. Parlog would dress as a “Grand Slam” breakfast. So Mr. Penning was bacon, Mrs. Musser was pancakes, Mrs. Dougherty was eggs and Mrs. Parlog was the syrup. They had to wear their costumes all day! They surprised the students with a special breakfast provided by the cafeteria of pancakes and syrup. It was a great celebration! Congratulations to our 4th grade teachers and students for their hard work and dedication this trimester.

Community Resources/Information
CHOOSE LOVE MOVEMENT
The Choose Love Formula™ is based on the profound result of practicing the character values inherent in “Nurturing Healing Love,” which are:
Courage + Gratitude + Forgiveness + Compassion in Action.
These four character values are easy to learn. When practiced, they strengthen the health and resilience of individuals, improve the community and culture of groups and promote a safer, more peaceful and loving world.
The benefits of teaching SEL in schools are significant; the addition of neuroscience, positive psychology and character education delivered by the no cost Choose Love For Schools™ program has a positive impact in overall school culture and the students’ and educators’ and school staffs’ lives outside of school, too.
