Thoughts on an Election

As we begin to come out of the recent election, I think it is very important to be aware of where your children are emotionally and recognize that some may have worries about the future. Not necessarily because they are entrenched in the politics of the day or that they have a clear understanding of the political process and implications of an election. Most importantly, because many of them do not, particularly our youngest learners. I have a very vivid memory of being a child and sitting on my parents’ bed watching the election results start to come in for the 1968 election. At some point, the candidate that was opposing my parents’ preference was in the lead and I began to cry. I was crying out of fear; a fear of the unknown. I had no idea what that would mean for the future, mine, or my family’s. I remember my father taking the time to walk me through what this could mean for the future and what this could mean for my family. Having my mind put at ease, as a young child, is something I have never forgotten.

I am writing this piece on Wednesday with no idea who will be declared our next president and for the purposes of this piece, it really doesn’t matter. What matters is that our students know that we are all in their corner and will do our very best to keep our energies and focus on them and their futures. Every teacher in this district will continue to do their very best to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, even while working remotely. As always, we will continue to support their growth as a learner. I am asking parents to take some time to make sure your children understand that the results of an election may impact big picture policy but will not change how you love and care for them as your child and that you will continue to keep them safe as a member of your family. We will do the same.
