August 2022
News from Mrs. Thode
Welcome to the 2022-23 school year. I am so excited to get started in my third year as your principal.
Back to School Night and Kindergarten Sneak-a-Peek:
Monday, August 22 is Back to School night for all students at Riverside. Preschool and first through fifth grade students will come from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Kindergarten students will come from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
First Day of School:
Tuesday, August 23 will be the first day of school for students in grades Kindergarten through fifth. Students that need to eat breakfast may arrive at 8:00 am. All other students should not arrive until 8:25, as we do not have adults to supervise children that arrive early. All students should enter during the gates to the playground.
Preschool students will begin on Monday, August 29. Students should arrive at 8:30 and will enter through the front entryway on Nash Street. Parents will meet preschool staff at the doors at that time.
Dismissal:
Students will be dismissed using two different dismissal areas. Dismissal times are:
3:15 for Preschool using the front doors-Parents will meet staff.
3:30 Kindergarten, 1st and second grade students through the front doors.
3:30 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students through the playground gates.
Please communicate with your children how they will be getting home each day. If your plans change, please call the office by 3:00 so that we can be sure to let them know in an appropriate amount of time.
Please remember that every Monday there is an early dismissal for teacher professional development. Dismissal times will be 2:15 and 2:30.
Questions:
Please call the office if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to working with you all this school year.

New Protocols Define Student Expectations
The District has implemented new protocols to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all students. The SCCSD Parent/Guardian – Student Handbook highlights these protocols including:
- Cell Phone & Tele Communicative Devices
- Derogatory and Threatening Language Towards Staff
- Vaping
- Attendance
We encourage you to review the handbook with your child to make them aware of what is expected of them as a student in the Sioux City Community School District. By following the protocols, together, our district will be one where all students believe, achieve, and succeed.
Important Reminders for School Meals
The federal government’s program that allowed all students access to free meals ended this summer. If your student qualifies for free or reduced meals, you will need to complete the online application if you have not done so already.
Families that do not qualify for free or reduced meals can deposit money into their student’s MySchoolBucks account. Information on meal prices for the 2022-2023 school year is available on the District’s website.
For questions or assistance with school meals, please contact the District’s Food Service Department at 712-279-6860 or 712-279-6862.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
