A Weekly Look at Grant Elementary School & the Grant PTA
Week of October 22, 2019
A Message From Principal Grey
Dear Grant Community,
Students today carry a lot on their shoulders. Meeting academic and social expectations and simply growing up and developing a sense of self and belonging can be challenging.
These challenges can affect their ability to focus attention, regulate difficult emotions, build inner resilience, and form healthy, strong friendships with their peers. In response, we teach effective ways to help calm our students’ anxious nervous systems while providing them with supportive relationships, nurturing experiences, and positive learning environments.
One strategy that we are beginning to use to support our students is mindfulness. Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment with openness and curiosity. It has a variety of research-backed impacts, including reduction in stress, more successful learning outcomes, emotional regulation, and focus. One of our wonderful school counselors, Karly Mertz will soon offer guided mindfulness sessions in our classrooms and two of our classes are piloting a mindful movement program for six weeks with local instructor, Ozlem Ozdener. When students come to school each day, we are thrilled to be able to support them in every way possible.
Go Shamrocks,
Ms. Grey
Here is a short video showing the benefits of mindfulness in a classroom:

Grant Cares, Donation Drive Underway
The Grant Cares team is collecting gift cards in the office to help some of our Grant families that may find the upcoming holidays a financial struggle. To help ease the burden, they've placed a heart shaped box in the office for gift card donations. If you are in the position to help, they're looking for gift cards to Target, Chevron, Old Navy or Trader Joe's in small increments, like $20 to $25, so that they can spread your gifts out to different families. Thank you for your support.
