A Weekly Look at Grant Elementary School & the Grant PTA

Week of October 22, 2019

A Message From Principal Grey

Dear Grant Community,

Students today carry a lot on their shoulders. Meeting academic and social expectations and simply growing up and developing a sense of self and belonging can be challenging.

These challenges can affect their ability to focus attention, regulate difficult emotions, build inner resilience, and form healthy, strong friendships with their peers. In response, we teach effective ways to help calm our students’ anxious nervous systems while providing them with supportive relationships, nurturing experiences, and positive learning environments.

One strategy that we are beginning to use to support our students is mindfulness. Mindfulness means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and surrounding environment with openness and curiosity. It has a variety of research-backed impacts, including reduction in stress, more successful learning outcomes, emotional regulation, and focus. One of our wonderful school counselors, Karly Mertz will soon offer guided mindfulness sessions in our classrooms and two of our classes are piloting a mindful movement program for six weeks with local instructor, Ozlem Ozdener. When students come to school each day, we are thrilled to be able to support them in every way possible.

Go Shamrocks,

Ms. Grey

Here is a short video showing the benefits of mindfulness in a classroom:

Grant's Got Talent Show, 10/25 6-8:30pm

Here comes the big show! Singers, gymnasts, pianists, dancers, magicians...we've got em' all! Come see our Grant Shamrocks take the stage and shine. It's always magical to see what happens at the Shamrock Theater. Plus, enjoy a baked treat at intermission as we raise money for Performing Arts and other PTA sponsored programs at Grant. Grant Halloween Parade, 10/31

Grant has a wonderful Halloween Parade tradition. At about 12:40pm on Halloween, the kids take to the parade route in costume, walking out the side of the school and coming down Mountain View back to Grant Avenue and into the front of the school. Parents often gather along the parade route to cheer them on and take photos. A note about costumes: no real or fake weapons will be allowed on campus and we ask that kids not wear masks covering the face for safety reasons. Thank you!

Grant Cares, Donation Drive Underway

The Grant Cares team is collecting gift cards in the office to help some of our Grant families that may find the upcoming holidays a financial struggle. To help ease the burden, they've placed a heart shaped box in the office for gift card donations. If you are in the position to help, they're looking for gift cards to Target, Chevron, Old Navy or Trader Joe's in small increments, like $20 to $25, so that they can spread your gifts out to different families. Thank you for your support.
