Happy November!! The days continue to fly by. As we get into the busyness of the next couple of months, I hope you and your family will be able to pause and find things that you are grateful for! I know, for me, one of my greatest joys is being a part of the Brookdale Community! I am so thankful for our students, their families, and staff! Perhaps start a family gratitude journal or list that you add one thing to each day. Research says that finding areas of gratitude supports stronger mental and physical health!

Our time at our temporary school is growing short - yay!! The district will be moving us into the new Brookdale starting bright and early, Saturday, Dec. 18. The next few weeks are going to be extra busy as we prepare for the move. On Tuesday, Nov. 23 there will be an informational parent meeting at 5:30-7:00. We will make sure the Power Point is available for all families after the meeting. This will be an opportunity to get questions answered about the move. See below for an update on the progress.

Native American Heritage Month

November is Native American Heritage Month, which gives us all the opportunity to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of the Indigenous people of this land.

The Franklin Pierce School District, which is on the traditional lands of the Puyallup Tribe of Indians, honors and respects our students and families with Native American heritage. Our Native American Education Program, which provides cultural and educational support to students in every school in our district. The district has approximately 225 students with Native American heritage representing over 45 different tribes in the United States.

Looking for Work?

Are you or do you know anyone who is looking for work, our district has many openings at all levels. The state has just waived the requirement of an Associates degree or passing the para test in order to work as a paraeducator. The district is also in need of substitutes. If you aren't able to work every day, this may be just the opportunity for you. Contact the office if you have questions or would like more information.

We would like to thank guest teachers and paras for the challenging and important job they do. When our staff is sick, we have a wonderful group of substitutes that come in and continue the education for your student until they return. We really appreciate their efforts!

School will be dismissed at 12:35 pm on Wednesday, November 24. Lunches will be served. There will also be no school for all students on Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26. We are thankful to work with wonderful students and families at Brookdale Elementary. Have a Happy Thanksgiving holiday.

The mission of the PLC is to serve the greater Parkland community through literacy training and academic support. We currently provide tutoring to all K-12 students in Franklin Pierce and Bethel School Districts. We offer support for writing in any course or subject. We have volunteers who can read with younger students. We support homework help in any subject area. We offer language tutoring for students learning Spanish or preparing for the STAMP test (which helps students in high school earn language credits for college). Support for English Language Learners from any background is also available. In the future, we hope to expand our offerings with adult literacy programming and workshops on subjects ranging from resume and cover letter development to financial literacy to creative writing.

The PLC is an encouraging and safe virtual space. We want to challenge common myths that some students are naturally better students, better readers, or better writers. The truth is that every student has a wealth of experience to share and any student can be an excellent reader, thinker, writer, or speaker. What does it take to improve? It takes support! And we’re here to offer it. We help students learn by building confidence, supporting skill development, and demystifying the learning process.

STUDENT EARLY DISMISSAL – If your child has an appointment and is leaving before the end of the school day, please make sure you send a note that morning letting the teacher and the office know. Also, please allow enough time for pick up. To preserve precious class time, we do not call students to the office until you have checked them out in person (remember your ID).

SCHEDULE CHANGES - The end of the day at Brookdale is very hectic. If you forgot to send a note in the morning (which is preferred) and need to call the school with a change to your child’s schedule, please do so before 3:15 p.m. After 3:15 the office is busy assisting students and parents and will not be able to answer your call or get a message to a student before they leave for the day. All end of the day schedule changes must be made through the office, not with the classroom teacher. Thank you!

UPDATE CONTACT INFORMATION - If any of your information has changed (address, contact info., email address, etc.) please contact the office right away. This year more than ever, it will be important to have the most current information. Also, let us know what your preferred method of contact is - phone, email, text. You can reach the office at 253.298.3100.

We are moving from a PTA format to a PTO. A PTO has fewer restrictions than the PTA. In order to make the transition, we must have a PTA meeting with officers to approve the budget and the move from PTA to PTO. We will be reaching out in the next couple of weeks to set up a meeting a begin the process. It would be great to have this all set as we move into the new building!
