Prestwick LEarns: Tech Talk
Our students are indeed digital natives and we celebrate their innovation with today’s tech tools. As important as it to provide great opportunities to them we also MUST anticipate the dangers of technology overload.
As a campus we focus on digital norms and safety in a variety of ways. We utilize go guardian application which allows teachers in class to monitor browsers that a student is using in class. They may close browsers and/or send a student feedback about being on task. We also get alerts for searches, words in documents, etc. that may be inappropriate through Gaggle for our students Google accounts. However, perhaps the most effective tools we have are our active monitoring during class as we move around the room and our conversations about digital citizenship. Our students in grades 6-8 just had lessons on this with Mrs. Wyse and their English teachers. Students in grades K-5 also get these lessons periodically from their classroom teachers and Mrs. Wyse during Media time.
Recently we came across a great article DIGITAL KIDS: How to Click With Young Techies by Ronica O’Hara spotlighted some excellent tips for parents and important people in this area.
Here were 8 tips mentioned:
1. Devise a family master plan for tech use. This plan may be as general or specific as you wish or need.
2. Set sensible time limits. Students often feel they need to always be on or have access – it is important to use this medium to teach moderation and prioritizing tasks.
3. Talk with kids. Explain the why for rules and expectations and keep lines of communications open in case they encounter something that needs to be discussed.
4. Ban devices and meal time and bedtime. There is plenty of research to support having times that are off limits to allow their brains to slow down and unwind and have good old-fashioned conversations.
5. Keep up with the latest tech releases. Your child will know these things and being informed helps you with tip #1 and #3.
6. Employ parental controls. A few examples are GoogleSafe-Search, Net Nanny or Qustodio Parental Control.
7. Create enjoyable alternatives. Provide your child with alternatives that are non-tech to keep them balanced.
8. Do a family digital detox. Model setting limits and take one day month and have the whole family go tech free and appreciate each other’s company.
Students will explore and have access to information that will be important for us to help them understand and make safe choices about. If you have questions about how to converse with them about tough topics please reach out to us. We are here to help!

Staff Spotlight
This week our spotlight is on our amazing Physical Education, Coach Luna. She serves both our elementary and middle school students at PSA. Here is what she has to say about herself:
Welcome! I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and express my enthusiasm about working at Prestwick STEM Academy. My name is Mia Luna and I am the K-8th Physical Education teacher and girls Pre-Athletics Coach. I am super excited to meet and teach your creative kiddos.
Outside of school, I am a wife and mother of two boys Josh and Alex. My hobbies are spending quality time with my family going camping or boating at the Lake. I have had a passion for fitness and health since I can remember. My goal is to motivate, enlighten, and build a partnership with the students, parents, and community.
