Symptoms of breast cancer include a lump in the breast, changes in size, shape, and color(redness). Just because there's a lump does not mean it is cancerous.

How Prevalent is Breast Cancer?

Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer type among american women today. Although rates began increasing in 2000 they decreased in 2003 by 7%. Scientists believe this was due to the declined use in hormonal therapy.

How is Breast Cancer Diagnosed?

Breast cancer is diagnosed by using mammograms, MRI, ultrasounds, Biopsy, and other lab tests. A mammogram is a type of x-ray that is used scan the breast to see if there's any tissue that is cancerous. In an MRI, a magnet attached to a computer sends radio waves through the tissue to scan it and takes images for the specialist to examine. A breast Biopsy is a procedure that removes the cancerous tissue and cells in the breast to be viewed by the specialist.

What happens at the cellular and molecular level?

Breast cancer starts because of abnormal cell growth. When this happens it leads to genetic changes at the cellular level and to tumors.

What are the treatments? What are the cures?

There are a couple different options when it comes to treating breast cancer. Doctors choose the most efficient based on the type of breast cancer. Variables that help a doctor decide include:

  • its stage and grade

  • size

  • whether the cells are sensitive to hormones.

Ways to remove breast cancer include:

  • removing the breast cancer (lumpectomy)

  • removing the entire breast (mastectomy)

  • removing a limited number of lymph nodes (sentinel node biopsy)

  • removing multiple lymph nodes (axillary lymph node dissection)

  • removing both breasts
