Facts about Puetro Rico...
The island was claimed by the Spanish Crown in 1493 by Chistopher Columbus. In 1898 after 400 years of colonial rule that saw the indigenous population nearly exterminated and African slave labor introduced, Puetro Rico was ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish American War. Its an island between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, east of the Dominican Republic.

Puerto Rico is a popular place for sports, adn the island hosts a number of sporting events. Sports on the islanc can even be traced to before European coloization, and how athletics have become an important part of Puerto Rican culture. Puerto Ricao has a winter baseball team with a devoted following of fans. People consider baseball to be the most popular sport on the island. The game was first played by a group of Puerto Ricans and Cubans who seen it while visiting the United States. The first two baseball clubs the Almendares Baseball Club and the Borinquen Baseball Club were established on the island in 1897. Puerto Rico participates in the Caribbean World Series. They have a roster of players in Major League Baseball, such as Hall-of-Famers Roberto Clemente and Orlando Cepeda.

San Juan is Puerto Rico's capital. It is also the most populous city in Puerto Rico. San Juan was found in 1521 by Juan Ponce de León, who first named it City of Puero Rico "Rich Port". The capital is the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction. But some people argue that St. Augustine , Florida which was found in 1565 is the oldest city in the continental United States. Their current population is 3.667 Million.
