Dear Parents/Guardians:
We are grateful this year for having the opportunity to be able to celebrate together in Division groupings. Our Junior High and Elementary groups celebrated the past two weeks with some school spirit kick off activities.
Our opening celebration was celebrated today virtually with Mrs. Phillips, her Grade 8/9 Religion class and Mr. Doug Kramer, our District Chaplain; leading and participating in this school wide liturgy. What a great way to come together in faith, prayer and reflection as we Arise! Get up! Get Going! and start this new year together.
Students will be learning about what it means to be a witness, what it means to live like Jesus and share the Good News in the world.
Take care, God bless and see you soon!

Grade 2 and 3 Literacy!
Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools has partnered with University of Alberta’s lead researcher and professor, Dr. George Georgiou, to participate in the Alberta Research Network (ARN) Literacy Study. The study aims to examine the learning loss in grade 2 and 3 students resulting from the pandemic and provides educators with professional learning opportunities on research-based practices to eliminate reading difficulties.
Grade 2 and 3 students across the division will be assessed in the areas of sight word recognition, fluency, phonics, phonemic awareness and reading comprehension. Students at risk for reading difficulties will receive intervention programming designed by Dr. Georgiou and delivered by trained interventionists, including teachers and educational assistants.
Further information will be outlined in the Parent/Guardian consent which will be shared with families in the third week of September. We’re pleased to work in partnership with the University of Alberta while providing a structured and systematic approach to reading instruction. Dr. Georgiou has preliminary evidence to suggest that the interventions will be effective and help approximately 300 children overcome reading difficulties.

GSACRD School Calendar
As you are aware, our Board of Trustees has made the decision to recognize September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, as a holiday for staff and students. In order to maintain the number of instructional days and keep the semesters balanced for our high schools, an adjustment to the calendar was required.
Please find attached an updated 2021-2022 Division Calendar, which reflects the changes. Key changes include:
- September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, is a holiday for staff and students.
- November 1, which was previously scheduled to be ATA Institute Day, is now a regular instructional day.
- January 30, which was previously to be a Division Faith and Wellness Day, is now the Division Faith & Wellness/ATA Institute Day.
