8th Grade Work on Display

In case you haven't had a chance to see them, there are some pretty great displays of 8th grade student work downstairs. Students reading To Kill A Mockingbird created psychological reports and tabloid articles for Boo Radley, and students created online profiles for Carl and Ellie Fredrickson from the movie UP. In math, students created posters based on some of their favorite pieces of media.

Interim Report Cards

Interim report cards will go home Wednesday, May 19th during homeroom. This is the last one, so that means the end of school is in sight!

Focus on Mental Health: Mrs. Burgess

Mrs. Burgess is a Mental Health Therapist, and she works at Southwood Academy one day a week. Mrs. Burgess has degrees from Winthrop University and Clemson University. When students could use therapy, Ms. Doolittle refers students to see Mrs. Burgess. According to Mrs. Burgess, mental health is just as important as physical health.

SC Mask Information

Pursuant to Executive Order No. 2021-23, issued by Governor Henry McMaster on May 11, 2021, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has developed a standardized form to provide consent for or on behalf of a student in any public school in the State of South Carolina to opt out a student from a face covering requirement imposed by any public school official or public school district pertaining to school operations and facilities. DHEC and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have provided guidance stating that the wearing of face coverings slows the spread of COVID-19. Failure to wear a face covering may subject a student to an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 and spreading COVID-19 to others.

By printing and completing the form below, you are authorizing your student to not wear a face covering while at school. A separate form must be completed for each child and turned in at each school's main office.

News from Nurse Rosa

COVID-19: Attendance is important and we want children to be in school every day that they are healthy. However, this year the greater good for school attendance is to keep children showing any symptoms of COVID-19 home until they are well. To keep all staff and classmates healthy, it is imperative that parents monitor the symptoms and temperatures of their children before sending them to school and implement the following steps:

1. Take the temperature of any child demonstrating shortness of breath, loss of taste, sore throat, muscle aches, chills, new or worsening cough, or runny nose.

2. Keep the child at home one or more days to monitor symptoms.

3. If you decide to have a COVID-19 test, notify the school nurse of the results so that the school can implement the Enhanced Health and Safety Protocols in the classroom(s) where your child attended.

*All information will remain confidential between the school and family. No other families will be given the health information of your child.

TDAP: All students are reminded that they must have their Tdap vaccination BEFORE starting 7th grade! Now is the time to schedule an appointment for your 6th grade student. Please submit documentation to Nurse Rosa after immunization.

For any health-related questions, call the office or email Nurse Rosa.
