We Are Learning...
Equity Work
-We read That is NOT a Good Idea! by Mo Willems. We noted kids' thoughts while we read and then talked about the fox character and why we thought he was "the bad guy" even though the book never stated that he would eat the duck.
-We also read All the Colors We Are and talked about the history of skin color.
Project Work
Reading
This week we used our knowledge of character traits and Venn diagrams to compare and contrast two characters from our read aloud, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. We learned that we can also think about how a book and movie are similar and different. After finishing the book, we watched the movie, stopping several times to compare and contrast events and other noticings between the two. If you want to extend this at home, try watching the older version, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971) to see how it is similar to and different from the newer version that we watched in class.
Writing
During writing this week we practiced using our opinion genre checklist to set goals for writing. We also worked on elaborating more with text evidence to support our opinions about our favorite books.
Checklist in Spanish, part 1
Checklist in Spanish, part 2
Checklist in Spanish, part 3
Phonics
Math
We discussed how Diana would need to open one package of ten. When she does this, she no longer has 4 full packs of ten; she has three and ten single containers. She could then take 5 from the 10 singles and she would have 3 packs of ten and five single containers left.
A Moment with Mrs. Chadwell - The TCE Global Studies Instructor
I will be going to Geist Elementary to teach in January. When the students return from Winter Break they will be working with our amazing Spanish teacher Mrs. Zimmerman. This will be her 3rd year teaching here at Thorpe, but has been teaching Spanish for many years. She will use music, games and stories to help teach the students Spanish. I have really enjoyed my time getting to know your children! I am looking forward to seeing them again when I return in August.
