HB5 Survey

Dear CMS Parents,

In 2013, the Texas Legislature passed House Bill 5 (HB 5), which made significant changes to curriculum and graduation requirements, as well as, the assessment program and accountability system. In addition to the new graduation requirements, HB 5 also includes a requirement for school districts to conduct a community or parent engagement survey and report results to the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The information collected in this survey will help us highlight areas of excellence, as well as recognize areas of growth as we strive to Build Excellent Schools Together.

The survey link included in this message may be used multiple times in the instance that you have students on different campuses and will be active from April 11 through May 6, 2016. Once you click on the link, you may select if you would like to complete the survey in English or Spanish.

Click here to take the HB5 survey:

I want to thank you for your participation in this survey and your continued support of CMS and GCISD.

No Charging Policy/Summer School

No charging will be allowed starting May 9th. Students must have a positive balance in order to purchase items in the school cafeteria. Any student without a positive balance will receive an alternative meal at lunch. Please visit to monitor account balances and set up low-balance email alerts. We appreciate your prompt attention in maintaining a positive meal balance.

Additional information may also be found on the districts website and Child Nutrition Facebook page.

Important outreach materials regarding the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) summer nutrition programs will be expected to arrive at the schools in early May.

Each package will contain the following summer outreach materials:

• Posters to display throughout their school in the month leading up to the summer break

• Postcards to pass out to every student enrolled (please send out at least two weeks before summer break)

For your reference, here are the locations of summer sites and the times they will be serving meals:

• Cross Timbers Middle School- Enrichment & KidzU:

Lunch: 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

• Timberline Elementary- Bilingual/ESL:

Lunch: 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

If you have any further questions, please contact Julie Telesca.

Student Lunches

Due to a Federal law called Food of Minimal Nutritional Value (FMNV), students cannot share or bring in any food items to share with friends. Please be aware, food items brought for a student must be eaten by that student only. If any large amounts are delivered for a group, only the student who the delivery is for will be allowed to eat those food items. To ensure no items are shared, the student may be separated if needed.

8th Grade Field Trip to Main Event

It is nearing the end of our 8th grade year and we are preparing for our annual 8th grade field trip to Main Event in Grapevine. The field trip will be Friday, May 20, 2016 following our awards ceremony. This is not to be confused with the 8th Grade Celebration the PTA sponsors.

Counseling Update May 9 - May 13

High School Credits that Middle School Students Can Take in Summer School - The only course offered in summer school for students going 6 to 7 and 7 to 8 is Touch Systems Data Entry. There is a fee to take a summer school course. Please keep in mind that summer school has a money commitment and a time commitment. You must make plans to attend class everyday. Students going from 8 to 9 have more summer school courses available.
