Peek at the Week
Week of 10/17/16
Shout Outs!
- Ms. Brouhard who is braving the shores and waves of Lake Merritt as each fifth grade class participates in a four day adventure of "Sailing into Science".
- Mr. Miller who continues to help build young leaders by developing our Safety Patrolers (even when we have no streets to cross)
- Ms. Sadiqa, Ms. Smith, Ms. Christina, Ms. Tasha, Ms. Pendeka, and Ms. Jamilah for a successful first evening event of the year for Learning Spot Families
- Mr. Alexander, Ms. Fowlkes, Ms. Brodsky, & Ms. Plambeck for hosting student teachers this year. We have a really strong group of emerging teachers and it's exciting to have them supported by such a great team of Glenview folks

MINDS (ACADEMICS & INSTRUCTION)
A Strong Start on SRI!
This year 58.3% of our students are starting the year as on or above grade level on SRI. Compared to 47.6% starting off as proficient or above in 2014-15.
This is great growth and may indicate that the work we are doing with Reader's Workshop is starting to pay off!
Network 4 Visit & Feedback
Thanks to everyone who hosted our visiting principal team.
Feedback for next steps include
1) looking at the tasks we ask students to do to make sure they align to our teaching points and align to standards
2) Push student depths of knowledge to increase rigor
3) Continue to develop our ability to have effective small groups to differentiate instruction
Bloggin' with Bart and Rob
Here's Mr. Litt's recent blog entry on his students working on non-fiction writing.
Mr. Alexander also does an informative blog for parents...If you are interested in setting up a blog, talk to Mr. Litt or Mr. Alexander....
Beguiling Bulletin Boards- So much writing!

Hearts (Social Emotional Learning)
PBIS Walk Through Feedback
Our next steps include
1) insuring that all classrooms have a Quiet Space for students to chill out so they don't miss instruction Do you have a designated Quiet Space in your room?
2) Making sure we have clear expectations for the public spaces (cafeteria, bathrooms, etc.)
3) Have a clear progressive discipline plan (we will discuss this at our Monday staff meeting on 11/14
Halloween Plan
Two important reminders for teachers:
1) There is no candy before, during or after Halloween. If parents bring candy to share, have students put the candy in their back pack to bring home.
2) There will be no extra or make up recess after the parade. Please bring your students back upstairs to have a party, watch a movie or do a craft. Too many excited students in costumes having unstructured playtime on the yard with lots of parents and siblings on campus sets our students up for an unsafe situation and unnecessary discipline consequences on what should be a fun day.
Great Article on Restorative Practices in Schools
“The more praise you give a student, the more willing they’ll be to work for you, rather than put out their bad behavior,” she said. “Catch them doing something good, and it goes a long way.”
