AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL!

There are a number of reasons, or pulls, why an immigrant, a person who leaves their country to live in another, comes to the United States. They come to escape poverty, war, and oppressive governments. Today's immigrants come to America to get a good education or to get better jobs. They are drawn to the US because of our democratic government and the security and safety it provides. In America, citizens are free to express themselves. They are free to practice their religion of choice. They have the right to a fair trial by jury, and the right to vote for their government officials. They are free to pursue "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"- THE AMERICAN DREAM!http://www.nbcnews.com/id/13504776/ns/us_news-being_an_american/

WHO CAN BE A US CITIZEN?

Naturalization is the process of becoming a US citizen and acquiring the rights and privileges that come with citizenship. To become a citizen, an immigrant must be at least 18 years old. They must have a green card (an identification card that proves an immigrant has permission to live and work in the US). They must have been a resident of the US for at least five years, demonstrate good moral character, and be willing to pledge loyalty to the US.

WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO BECOME A US CITIZEN?

The naturalization process includes filling out official forms, providing photographs and copies of their green card and paying a fee. The immigrant must demonstrate proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in English. The person seeking citizenship must also pass a test demonstrating knowledge of the United States in areas of Government, American History and Integrated Civics (which includes geography, symbols and holidays). They must complete an interview where they answer questions about their work and family, and take the oath pledging loyalty to the US. Finally, they attend a citizenship ceremony. https://drive.google.com/a/student.lebtwpk8.org/file/d/0B7swwXGQFgvbbi1RRGpWSWN5SHc/view
