Greetings Mize Families!
I hope you all had a fabulous weekend and were able to stay dry with all of the rain! I want to take this opportunity to thank all who attended Parent-Teacher conferences last week. These meetings provide an opportunity to develop partnerships between home and school and build an important foundation in your child’s academic success. It was truly great to see so many of you throughout our halls.
I also want to express our gratitude for all of the amazing food that many of you provided during this time. These days tend to be long and it’s always nice for teachers to be able to get together and enjoy the thoughtful meals from our families. Your generosity and kindness are greatly appreciated!
Finally, our Mize Peace, Love, and Walk-N-Roll-A-Thon Kick-Off assembly was held last Wednesday. Your child should have brought a packet home containing details. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and your support helps provide amazing things for our students, teachers, and classrooms.
Last year, your generous donations and support provided a beautiful, paved trail for all to enjoy. It has been great to see families utilize it during daily, runs and walks. Our students have been able to enjoy fresh air breaks with it, as well. These funds have also allowed our Mize PTO the ability to provide much needed grants for classrooms. With these donations, we have been able to purchase new technology, classroom seating options, and various other classroom items for our students. Please know that your continued support and dedication to our building is greatly appreciated. We hope you will all be able to join us for some Groovy Fun on October 18th, as it always proves to be a great time!
Have a wonderful week, everyone!
Ms. Balthazor

TO ALL STUDENTS AND PARENTS:
The De Soto School District has been an important and strong participant in the Kansas Teacher of the Year Program for many years. De Soto has had fourteen state finalists and twelve semi-finalists represented in the program since 2000. Two of our very own teachers were chosen as The Kansas Teacher of the Year; Keil Hileman in 2004 and Jeri Powers in 2008. This is truly unprecedented! Matt Bradford (DHS) and Emily Valdez (SE) will be representing our district in the 2020 Kansas Teacher of the Year program. The 2020 Kansas Teacher of the Year will be announced in November in Wichita.
We would like for you to nominate any teacher whom you consider to be an outstanding and effective educator and whom you or your child has had as a teacher. This person must be a tenured employee of USD 232. If there is a De Soto educator whom you believe to be outstanding and deserving of special recognition, please fill out the form below. This form needs to be returned to your building principal by noon on October 4, 2019.
National School Lunch Week..10/14-10/18
The week of October 14th – 18th is National School Lunch Week!
To celebrate we will have Eat Your Colors Week.
The National School Lunch Program serves more than 30 million students every school day across our nation. President John F. Kennedy created National School Lunch Week in 1962 to promote the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child’s life and the impact it has inside and outside of the classroom. To celebrate, we will have “Eat Your Colors” Week in the lunchroom! Each day has an assigned color that will be featured through various food items. Please have your student(s) help us celebrate by dressing in the color of the day!
Monday, October 14th – No School
Tuesday, October 15th – Red Day
Wednesday, October 16th – Yellow Day
Thursday, October 17th – Orange Day
Friday, October 18th – Rainbow Day
It will be a fun-filled, colorful week!
Nurse Notes
Immunizations, all students must be current on their vaccinations by October 14th, 2019 or they will be excluded from school on that date. Letters were sent home and a second reminder will be mailed stating which vaccination(s) are missing. Please provide proof of vaccination by providing one of the following;
· A statement from your health care provider with the day, month, and year that your child received the vaccination (s),
· A statement signed by your doctor indicating a medical exemption or delayed schedule, or
· A statement of religious exemption signed by a legal guardian.
On August 2nd the state of KS passed a new law requiring all Kindergarten and 1st grade students to have two Hepatitis A Vaccinations. If your child had two Hepatitis A vaccinations and you still received a letter, your child likely received the 2nd vaccine too early for it to be considered valid by the state of Kansas. This will require your child to receive a 3rd dose of the vaccination to be compliant. If you have older children that have not had their 1st or 2nd Hepatitis A vaccination, it’s a good idea to get them caught because the state will be expanding the requirement to older children next year.
If your child suffers seasonal allergies please be sure to medicate them prior to the start of the school day. The health room only stocks allergy medication for use in emergency situations. We are happy to keep over-the-counter medications from home in our office; please include a note from home giving us permission to give the medication, and send the medication in its original packaging with the medication’s dosing instructions.
Looking forward to a great school year!
