What is teaching Internet Safety important?
Touch base on these ideas during morning meeting or next time to open up Chromebooks. It's important that students hear this from many adults not just the tech lady :) So model and share the importance of internet safety.
Every year, per district requirement, our classrooms must go through three Digital Citizenship lessons: Internet Safety, Cyberbullying and Research Skills. These Common Sense Media lessons are vertically aligned and supported by both the Digital Lead Teacher and Media Coordinator.
Here´s what you can expect this year:
- Internet Safety: The first lesson of the year is led by DLT and will build from the year before. It also includes a piece on how we take care of our devices and accounts (we've also discussed this part in 3-5 iReady time).
- Cyberbullying lesson: This lesson focuses on how we deal with social media and/or online bullying and will require some co-teaching (Don't worry! We´ll chat about what this can look like for your classroom). To be completed in January-March.
- Research skills: This is led by Ms. Brown and can either be it's own lesson OR be part of a research/inquiry project you know is coming up. Ms. Brown already integrates research skills lessons into her K-2 library classes but if these grade levels would want to work with her on specific research projects, please feel free at any time to reach out.

Need CEUs?
The Learning Differences MOOC-Ed is a six-week long, online course that hopes to help educators understand the ways in which students’ learning varies and what they can do to meet every student’s needs.
The course first encourages teachers to understand their own learning differences and then goes into depth on strategies for learning differences in executive function, working memory, and motivation. Instructional coaches, media coordinators, and teacher leaders will have the opportunity to participate in an additional two units focused on strategies for coaching and supporting other teachers in their work with learning differences. Teachers in North Carolina will receive 2.5 CEUS. Teachers can complete course activities any time, any where as it works for them.
The course starts October 2 - so please register today and share this opportunity with other educators you think might enjoy. Check out go.ncsu.edu/ldmooc to learn more or register today!
