Spotlight On Kindness Week
Sunflower Elementary staff, students and culture focus on building kindness every day throughout the year. We are putting a special spotlight on kindness the week of October 23rd through October 27th. During this week, our kids and staff will be engaged in an array of kindness driven activities. Ensuring a kind school community involves partnering with parents. To support parents, we wanted to share with you The Anti-Bullying Alliance. It has great information for parents regarding defining bullying vs. friendship “fall outs”, types of bullying, helpful ideas to support your child if he/she is being bullied, ways to work with the school, etc.
You will also be receiving a flyer with all the great kindness activities planned for our Acts of Kindness week.
ONE SCHOOL ~ ONE BOOK
The goal of this program is to promote reading as a family within our school community. Please take the time during the month of October to read and enjoy this book with your children!
Parent Teacher Conferences
Parent Teacher Conferences are October 18 from 4-8pm and the 19th from 8am -8pm. You will be receiving information from your child’s classroom teacher soon.
You can make the most of your time with your child’s teacher by being prepared. Use the checklist below from ColorinColorado.org to help you prepare for conferences.
Parent-Teacher Conference Checklists
Before the conference
· Ask your child how she feels about school.
· Ask your child if there is anything that he wants you to talk about with his teacher.
· Tell your child that you and the teacher are meeting to help her.
· Make a list of topics that you want to talk about with the teacher.
· Prepare a list of questions such as:
1. What are my child's strongest and weakest subjects?
2. Does my child hand homework in on time?
3. Does my child participate in class?
4. Does my child seem happy at school?
5. What can I do at home to help?
During the conference
· Be on time (or early) for the meeting.
· End the meeting on time. Other parents will probably have a conference after yours.
· Relax and be yourself.
· Stay calm during the conference.
· Ask the most important questions first.
· If your child receives special services such as English classes, ask about your child's progress in those classes.
· Ask for explanations of anything you don't understand
· Ask your child's teacher for ways that you can help your child at home.
· Thank the teacher.
After the conference
· Talk about the conference with your child.
