The Seahawks Call

Week of November 9, 2020 Volume 9

Message from Principal Taylor

Preparation for Phase 2

Yesterday, Superintendent Kim Hill sent a message to Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) stating how we were prepared to move to Phase 2 of our Reopening Plan; however, the recent rise in COVID-19 cases has caused us to pause our move to in-person learning for students.

Therefore, we will remain in Phase 1 and will not consider a move to Phase 2 until after the first of the year because of the upcoming holiday season. CCPS will continue virtual learning for all students until further notice.

Effective Monday, November 9th, students will continue to learn in the virtual learning environment.

Big picture

Drive Through Thanksgiving Food Drive

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we are in need of non-perishable food donations for our Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. The donated food will be used to provide Thanksgiving baskets to families from our own Milton Somers Community. We are doing a contact-free drive thru event on Thursday, Nov. 12th from 2-3pm to collect donations. Please swing by to see some of your favorite teachers and drop off your donations! Can't make it to our event? No problem! You can drop off your donations to our collection box outside of the school now through November 19th.

Career Technology and Education (CTE) Programs

Hello 8th Grade Families,

The time has come for you and your student to begin thinking about his or her transition from Milton Somers to High School. Throughout the middle school years, we have explored various educational and career outlets. Charles County Public Schools provides a great opportunity for students to narrow down their potential career choices. North Point High School offers 16 CTE programs beginning in 9th grade. Additionally, various Career Technology and Education programs are available at all our high schools throughout the school system.

Over the last two days, I have sent out information to parents and students via Synergy. Please make sure to check your ParentVue and StudentVue emails to receive important CTE information. Also, in your spare time, please check out the CTE promotional video below:

Also, November 19, 2020 is “National Parent Involvement Day”. Please mark your calendars for a special virtual CTE presentation for you, our Milton Somers family, at 6pm! The Somers PTSO will be hosting a virtual Parent Information Night in which CTE Specialists will be present to answer any questions and provide more information. This is a great opportunity for parents and students to login to gain extra knowledge for the upcoming CTE application process.

Important date to remember:

  • CTE Application opens on Monday, November 23, 2020 and will close on Tuesday, December 22, 2020 more information will follow.

Please continue to monitor your students’ progress as we work together to navigate virtual learning.

Sincerely,

Counseling Department

Celebrate American Freedom Week - November 9 - 13, 2020 Let's Honor our very own MSMS Veterans

A Tribute to our Veterans - Freedom is not Free by Ashley Persyn

There is a price we pay for freedom

For it is not truly free

But rather paid for by the contributions of veterans

To buy our liberty,

As their blood drains from their body and runs like a river through the grass

Over the years it’s forgotten, war is placed in our past

I don’t think we all realize the importance Veterans play

as they voluntarily serve America each and every day.

We should honor the veterans for they act like a shield

Protecting us from danger, keeping America healed.

So if you would take a second to commemorate

You will instantly see

We owe veterans our gratitude

For they are the reason we are free.
