Thanksgiving Holiday

When you're relaxing at home on the week of the Thanksgiving holiday, enjoying time with your friends and family, and a delicious meal, take time to give thanks for Sarah J. Hale- the Mother of Thanksgiving.

A few of her accomplishments are-

  • Sarah J. Hale was one of the first female novelists in the United States, and the first female novelist to address the issue of slavery (25 years before Uncle Tom's Cabin was published).
  • Editor of the Ladies Magazine (1828-1836), the first magazine for women- edited by a woman.
  • Author of children's favorite "Mary Had a Little Lamb." Along with novels, gift books, poetry, cook books and children's books.
  • Founded the Seaman's Aid Society in 1833 to help take care of the families of dead sailors.
  • Editress of Godley's Ladies Book (1837-1877), the most widely read magazine of the 19th century.
  • Worked to preserve Mount Vernon (George Washington's Home) for future generations.
  • Raised the funds to build the Bunker Hill Monument.
  • Spent 17 years writing five different presidents and publicly campaigning to have Thanksgiving made into a National Holiday (Taylor, Filmore, Pierce, Buchanan, and Lincoln).
  • She did all of this as a single mother of five children.
  • THANK YOU SARAH J. HALE!

RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH!!!!

THIS MONTH OUR SIXTH GRADERS HAVE BEEN REVIEWING PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SOURCES-

to help them with the final stages of research for their History Fair Projects. Students identified different sources and discussed what made them qualify as a primary or secondary source. (Hint: A primary source is from the actual time period being studied, and a secondary resource is a step or two away from a primary source.)

FREEDOMFLIX AND TRUFLIX

I am so excited about two of the new resources available through the Aldine Online Resources page.

FreedomFlix and TruFlix are enhanced eBooks. All of the books feature primary and secondary sources, videos, audio, images and text about a wide variety of topics. I encourage you to go online and check them out, there is material available that is suitable for all subject areas. Each book even comes with quizzes and lesson plans!
