Libby Tiger Newsletter
News for our Families: Week of January 30-February 3, 2023
Principal's Message/Mensaje de la Directora
Love at Libby!
We are approaching February and the month has many heartfelt dates, including Healthy Heart Month, Black History Month, and of course, Valentine's Day.
All of us here at Libby want our Tigers to be healthy and strong! Healthy bodies mean choosing healthy snacks like fruit, whole wheat crackers, and vegetables. Sending your students to school with grapes, carrot sticks, and crackers help their bodies and minds stay sharp. Our 3rd-5th graders keep their hearts healthy when participating in our Libby Tiger Run Club! What a great example to keep our bodies and hearts strong!
We also show our joy when we recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and impact of our Black Americans during Black History Month. Our love is shown when we honor all of the contributions they have made to our country. Read more in our Family Resource section.
Valentine's Day also recognizes the love we all have for one another! We must always remember that the love we show for our children and family is not just shown on one day, but EVERY DAY! Have a great week!
Sincerely,
Ms. Hilary Cuevas
Principal
Heartfelt February is Almost Here!
Healthy Heart Month
Healthy Food Choices at School
In February we are reminded that our hearts are the most important organ in our body that helps maintain good health. The choices we make for our children, helps them build good habits into their adulthood. It all starts with healthy food choices.
- Chips, Takis, Cheetos, are high in fat and salt. Young hearts are affected by the fat and salt which can lead to weight gain, diabetes, and later, high-blood pressure.
- Candy, pudding, sweet breads affect the heart by increasing blood sugar that later can cause a decrease in blood sugar which can make young hearts and brains tired and lethargic.
- The saying goes, "You are what you eat". Healthy foods make for healthy children. Healthy children learn better too!
- Encourage Healthy Lunch at school! Our hardworking cafeteria staff always make sure our healthy fruit and vegetables make it on our students' plate. Talk to your children about eating fruit and veggies and not tossing them out in the trash.
Celebrating the Contributions of Black Americans
Black History Month~Past to Present!
February is also Black History Month and all month we will highlight the contributions of our Black Americans past AND present! We celebrate their contributions to our country and to our community!
Mr. Allen Smith
Our first Black American to recognize and celebrate is the heart of Libby! It's Mr. Allen Smith, our lead custodian. Mr. Allen is a former Marine who served our great country in Beirut. He is a pillar to our Libby community for the past 20 years. He has seen our Libby Tigers grow from young children to adults. Some of our Libby families were once students at Libby and they always ask to see Mr. Allen. He has made a lasting impact on many and he is certainly loved by all. We honor you, Mr. Allen, and recognize the joy you bring to each and every one of our Libby students and staff!
Family Learning Resources
Black History is American History
The month of February is designated in the United States as Black History Month, a month set aside to honor the important role that African Americans play in the story of our country. How does your school or community celebrate Black History Month?
Reminders!!
TRAFFIC ALERTS!!!!!
BE SAFE!!!
It is extremely important that all of our Libby Families be safe when dropping off and picking up their students from school. We have had many reports of people in our school community not following traffic rules!
- DO NOT SPEED!
- DO NOT PARK IN THE DROP OFF/PICK UP ZONE!
- PARK IN THE PARKING LOT
- STAY IN YOUR CAR!
- MOVE FORWARD THROUGH THE DROP OFF/PICK UP ZONE
- WATCH FOR FAMILIES WALKING
- BE PATIENT AND BE AWARE, STAY OFF YOUR CELL PHONES
We are looking for volunteers to help us keep students safe. Please call the office if you are interested in volunteering. We need volunteers from 8:00-8:15 am and 2:45-3:15pm (M, T, Th, F) and 12:15-12:45pm (W). Thank you for your cooperation.
Remember to Charge Your Device!
Bring Your Device Charged Up and Ready!
Each day our Libby Tigers use their electronic device (Chromebook, tablets) to access learning from iReady to Nearpod and with many technology based programs. Please help your children to remember to charge their device so that they are ready to learn. If you are having issues with the device, please inform your child's teacher. Build a daily routine of plugging in the device and then bringing it to school.

Talking to Your Children About Current Events
We have seen many news items regarding the recent violence in our country. For young children this may bring anxiousness, worry, and fear. Here are a few ideas to help your child feel comfortable and safe.
- Limit the amount of time your child watches the news or has access to the news through social media. Monitor their exposure and use of media.
- Spend quality time addressing your child's fears in a loving and caring manner. Children need to feel safe and heard.
- Watch for signs of anxiety: chewing fingernails, pacing, acting out, hiding, toilet changes, poor sleep, crying, and not eating or eating too much.
- Seek out professional support through your health care provider.
- Reach out to our counselor, Ms. Baron, for more resources at holly.baron@oside.us or Ms. Gibney for community school resources at natalie.gibney@oside.us.

Cold and Flu Season is Here!
Cold and flu season is upon us. Health officials are warning there may be high levels of influenza compared to the past two years, when COVID-19 precautions helped keep flu infections low. As a reminder, please do not send your child to school if they are feeling sick or experiencing symptoms of a virus. . See more prevention tips from the CDC.
Safety First!!!
Parent Volunteer Safety Patrol Needed
Libby Elementary always has a focus on safety! It is one of the most important concerns. We would like to start a Volunteer Safety Patrol to help us direct traffic, assist in helping children exit and enter their cars, and keeping our students safe during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up. If you have a focus on safety and have time during the morning, 7:45-8:15am and/or 2:10pm-3:15pm, we would appreciate your help. We can create a schedule and with enough volunteers, it would be just 30 minutes of your time once or twice a week. Please contact Mrs. Campisi at kristina.campisi@oside.us for more information. Thank you!
Keep CLEAR!
New Signs! Drop Off/Pick Up Zone
Please follow our new signs and do not drop off/pick up students until you move all the way down the curb. DO NOT PARK ON THE CURB! When you drop off/pick up before the drop-off/pick up zone, cars back up on to W. Redondo Dr and that is very DANGEROUS! Please be safe and courteous for all families and their students.
No Dogs on Campus

Students Out More Than 5 days Need an Independent Study Contract. Please Read!
Independent Study Contracts
If your child will be away from school longer than 5 days, please let us know ahead of time (at least a week prior) so that we can prepare an Independent Study Contract. The contract will first need to be approved by the principal and will include school work for your child to complete so that the missing days from school will not be considered "unexcused". Please call our office at 760-901-7000 or stop by to speak with an office staff member. Without approval or without prior notice to set up the contract, the days missed will be marked "unexcused". Thank you for your cooperation!
Weekly Envelope!
Every week your child takes home a weekly information envelope. Inside are important flyers, letters, and items that need your attention. Please remove the items and return the signed envelope back to school with your child. Thank you!
