Themes of The Book Thief
The Book Thief has many themes. The themes include: Death, love, war, and suffering. The theme that will be focussed on is suffering. Mostly because it is common in this book and they both play major roles in the story. Without this theme, we wouldn't have our story!
The rose above symbolizes death. It has an innocent but scary feel to it.
Quotes That Show The Theme Suffering
Quote 1:
"He stood at her threshold and she must have seen it on his face. Two sons in six months." (Zusak 504)
This quote shows how a lady had lost both her sons in a short period of time. It shows how common suffering is.
Quote 2:
"Liesel... They got me a few months ago. The voice was crippled but it dragged itself towards her. Half way to Stuttgart." (Zusak 511)
This quote shows how Liesel's friend, a Jewish man named Max, was captured as he fled for his life. Max was one of her best friend during rough times and she longed to see him everyday.

"Liesel was holding Rudy Steiner's shirt by the front. Rudy please. The tears grappled with her face." (Zusak 535)
This citation is an example of suffering because it shows how Liesel was full of despair and sadness when Rudy died.
