Summer Reading Challenge

Dear Students and Parents,

As the school year winds down, the perfect season for relaxed, enjoyable, and exciting reading is approaching — SUMMER! There are some wonderful programs to keep you reading this summer.

Attached here you will find a journal for CONNECTICUT READS 2021, “Tails and Tales”, Governor’s Summer Reading Challenge. We would like each student to keep track of the books they read this summer and bring their summer reading journal to school when they return in the fall.

The Southbury Public Library will also be offering a fabulous summer reading program entitled Tails and Tales”! Registration begins Saturday, June 19th. The library plans to make summer fantastic through storytimes, crafts, programs and more! There are lots of themed events happening all summer long. Be sure to take advantage of all the Public Library has to offer, as well as using your library card regularly! Visit the Southbury Public Library at www.southburylibrary.org to find out more about this program.

To help you with your summer reading selections, we have included a list of age-appropriate books, but we hope you’ll do some “library exploring” and find a few of the many other exciting books waiting for you. (These lists can also be found on our website: http://www.region15.org/pes. Go to: Library Media Center > Summer Reading Lists). We will be adding a Summer Reading Padlet and Pop Up Flip Grids this summer - please look for them under the Library Media Center tab as well. This is a fantastic way for readers to stay connected throughout the summer.

We wish your family a relaxing summer full of reading adventures. On your mark, get set, read!

Summer Math Challenge

Dear Students and Parents,

This summer the CT Commissioner of Education is offering free learning opportunities for our children in mathematics to help address the learning loss due to Covid 19. Their support to minimize the summer slide cannot be underappreciated.

The 2021 Commissioner's Summer Math Challenge stresses the importance of maintaining math skills during the summer. Schools compete based on student population and grade level. The program identifies the schools with the highest percentage of participating enrollment and the highest number of badges earned by participating students.

The following are links to the registration and other materials available online:

Region 15 will be participating in the Summer Math Challenge. Only the Summer Math Logs need to be turned in upon return to school in the fall 2021. We encourage all of our students to participate. Certificates will be awarded to schools with the highest participation. Winning schools will be recognized in a special ceremony.

Kindest Regards,

Javier Perez & Annie Smith
