Sand Ridge Shark Bites

Issue #4 - September 24, 2018

September 24, 2018

Good Monday Morning Shark Families,

We are hopeful that this finds you and your family safe and on the road to recovery from the impacts of Hurricane Florence. Sand Ridge staff is eager to hear from our students and looking forward to being back together at school as quickly as possible.

We know that the storm has caused damage that has displaced students from their homes. Students who have been displaced by the hurricane are entitled to federal benefits under the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance act. This includes the opportunity for your child to remain at his or her school regardless of the location of your current housing. This includes families that are staying in hotels or shelters, living with family or friends, or residing in vehicles, campgrounds or other locations. Transportation will be provided by the district from your current residence to your child's original school, if desired. Additionally, students qualify for immediate approval for free meal assistance if not already enrolled. You also have the right to enroll in the school determined by your current address if you desire to do so, even if you do not have the documentation typically required for enrollment.

To apply for assistance through the McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act, please visit Onslow County Schools Student Services Department at the district office, located at 200 Broadhurst Road, Jacksonville, NC 28540. The Student Services Department will be open beginning Monday, September 24, 2018 at 9:00 am. If you are unable to visit the district office, please call 910-455-2211 and ask for the Student Services Department. We would like to have any necessary services in place prior to returning to school. ** At the present time, phone lines at the district office are down. They are working on restoring them as quickly as possible.

Our school leadership team will be meeting on Tuesday, September 25, 2018 to begin assessing our needs, planning for the return of our students, and rescheduling events that have been missed. We have scheduled a Strategic Planning Team Meeting for Thursday, October 4, 2018 at 7:00 am. In the event that we are not in school, we will reschedule this meeting.

We have created a Check-in Form for our students to let us know how you are all doing. Please complete the form to let us know that you are all okay, where you are, and any specific needs you have. The form can be reached at the link below.

Important Information About Donations: Sand Ridge Elementary and Onslow County Schools are deeply appreciative of the outpouring of donations to assist our students. Unfortunately, storm damage to out schools has left us without the facilities to store those materials. At this time, please direct any donations for the school system to local charities such as Onslow Community Outreach, The United Way of Onslow County or the Swansboro Rotary.
