Mrs. Miller's Weekly Update
February 6 - February 12, 2023
Those of you who are parents can most likely relate to the feeling of wanting what is best for your kids. However, sometimes what we think is best does not align with what they think is best. And that's tricky.
Reading this quote reminded me that as a mom, I need to let my kids be their own person. I need to respect that they are learning and growing as individuals. I need to help them make the most of their strengths and support them as they learn and grow.
After reading the quote a second time, it struck me that this holds true as an educator as well. We have great kids at GHVHS, and each one is talented in his or her own way. Part of my job as their principal is to help them develop their strengths and also help them in areas where they need growth.
Which leads me to the next quote.... and change the word "Teacher" to "Educator". Everyone who works in a school system has the amazing opportunity to influence and impact students.
Like I've said before, educating our students is a collaborative effort between school and home. We are teaching our kids to be kind, caring, compassionate, responsible members of society that will make great contributions to our world.
Also like I've said before, I know without a doubt that all students are talented and gifted in their own way. Some of our kids may not do very well in a traditional classroom setting, but they may thrive in classes that are more hands on. Others may excel in reading and writing but struggle in math or science. We also have students who thrive in music, art, and athletics. There are so many ways in which our kids' talents shine through.
In education, there are state requirements regarding what classes students need to take and pass in order to earn a high school diploma. Those are the facts. However, it's also important for us to know that each person is "intelligent" in their own way.
Which brings me back to the first quote of this newsletter....
"My job is to get to know them, really know them, and then help them make the most of their strengths."
She will be sharing an awesome message of courage, resilience, and strength with our staff and students on Thursday. We are so grateful for the grant we received from Hancock County Economic Development to make this happen. We can't wait!
