Notes from the Tom Lea Library
Did you know that our Tom Lea Library catalog has the ability to locate books based on your child’s interest and reading level? The Tom Lea Library has two unique catalogs tailored for the lower and upper grades. They both provide for a summary of the book, location in the library, AR level, and AR test number
For the upper grades, the students may use the following link to access the catalog of books: https://elpaso.tlcdelivers.com/?config=178#section=home
One key feature for the students is the ability to find books based upon their reading level or AR level with the topics or subjects that they are interested in. All they need to do it click on the Reading Level under the Advanced Search.
The other online catalog uses student friendly icons that are easy for the lower grades to use: https://elpaso.tlcdelivers.com/kids?config=178#/categories
This catalog allows the students to search books from “series” or “chapter books”.
If your child is virtual, just use the catalog to locate the books you would like to have for your child to read at home and then email the list to me at lkgailey@epis.org and I will get them ready for pickup.
Thank you,
Lisa K. Gailey, Librarian
Nurse News
Tom Lea Parents,
I just wanted to remind all of our parents of some important items as more students return to campus for face to face instruction. It brings me so much joy to see their wonderful faces back at school and having some sort of normalcy again… and MY have they all grown!
1. Please keep ill students home- Remember that there are other common illnesses that children can be exposed to, such as strep throat infections, stomach viruses, common colds, and the flu. WE CAN NOT forget that those are still reasons to keep a child home. Please call in the absence if they will not be doing virtual for the day, but if they do stay home and an absence is not called in, THEY ARE STILL REQUIRED TO LOG ON VIRTUALLY WITH THEIR TEACHERS.
2. All medications must have a doctor’s order, parent consent, and MUST be given to the school nurse for administration- PLEASE do not send your child to school with a medication to self administer or to “give to the nurse”(I still need a doctor’s order and your written consent).
3. Please return any hearing or vision referrals sent home with your child to the nurse- The Health Services protocol requires me to open a case on any health referrals that I send home. It is important that I receive some type of communication and update on the referral. You can write a note on the referral, call me at 915-230-5457, email me at algutier@episd.org, or have the doctor send me a document stating that the child has been seen and the outcome (fax 915-821-3665). If your child is virtual and is in PK, Kinder, 1st, 3rd, or 5th; please contact me to make an appointment for his/her state mandated vision and hearing screenings.
4. Please sign up for the Telemedicine Program here at school through Virtual Care for Kids-School Health program- I have been utilizing this tool a lot due to student that may feel ill during the day and do not qualify to be automatically sent home. I have also had grateful feedback from parents because this reduces the wait time at the doctor’s office and the exposure risk. Check out their website for further information and see EPISD real testimonials (including my experience) recorded while we were still working from home. https://virtualcarefamilies.com/schoolmed/
5. Don’t forget to wear a clean mask every day!- All students were given a package of 5 white masks, one for each day. Please make sure that your child is coming to school with a CLEAN mask every day.
Know the Difference Between COVID-19 and Seasonal Allergy Symptoms
COVID-19 and seasonal allergies can share similar symptoms. It's important to recognize and assess how students are feeling so you can administer the proper care. If your students are suffering from seasonal allergies, there are many Over the Counter (OTC) treatments to ease symptoms and find relief. If your students do not have a history of seasonal allergies, and are experiencing severe COVID-19 symptoms,it is best to have them tested as soon as possible.

PTA News and Information
The PTA would like thank the following people for making this year's Dance Fit Fundraiser a success.
Mrs. Gailey, for being the best announcer/motivator and getting the information and videos out to students and staff each morning. Also, for coming up with the last challenge idea, which included her getting soaked in a water fight by the students.
PEL Jen Baca & Military Family Liaison Tessie Vallez, for being the behind the scenes people for decorating and figuring out how to make this event inclusive in the age of everything having to be virtual. Also for posting all of the information on Class Dojo, sending out voice messages, and getting the information in the Brave Bull Newsletter, so all families were aware of everything that was occurring.
Coach Martinez, Acosta, Mendoza and Cephus for once again helping us coordinate and execute this event during their PE time. Also a big shoutout to Coach Mendoza for having huge school spirit and wearing the Brave Bull costume during the event.
Mrs. Casillas, for allowing us to throw some crazy ideas her way, and not saying "No" to any of them. Even the one that included her being the target of silly string.
Mrs. Mohler and Dr. Lee for being good sports and allowing Mrs. Gailey to include them in the festivities of getting soaked by the students.
The Tom Lea teachers for getting all the information out to their students each night and keeping their classrooms motivated to register and get pledges.
And last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank our Tom Lea Families! Without you reaching out to your family and friends for monetary donations, new PE equipment and water bottle filling stations would not be in our near future.
Without each one of you, this event would not have been possible and from the bottom of our hearts, the Tom Lea PTA thanks each and every one of you!
With Sincere Gratitude,
Your Tom Lea PTA Board
