Definition
is a condition where the placenta lies low in the uterus and partially or completely covers the cervix. The placenta may separate from the uterine wall as the cervix begins to dilate (open) during labor.
Symptoms
- most common symptom is painless bleeding in the 3rd trimester
- premature contractions
- uterus gets larger than is should according to gestational age.
- baby is breeched
- in transverse position
Risks
- if over the age of 35
- had more than 4 pregnancy
- history of uterine surgery
Treatment
- requires bed rest
- steroid shot to help the baby's lungs grow
- immediate cesarean delivery if bleeding isn't controlled
- limit your traveling
