Math Moments - April 2016
Challenging Your Child in Math
Here are some examples:
- Show (or tell) two different ways to make $2.35. What are the least amount of coins you could use to show that amount?
- What's the answer? If the answer is 42 can you think of a problem. (Ex. 6x7=42, 20+20+2=42...)
- If you solved a problem using multiplication, can you show how division could relate to solving the problem? (3x4=12 and 12 divided by 3=4).
- Give your child 3 numbers and have them create a story problem. (Ex. 18, 10, 8)
- After your child has solved a problem ask how the answer would change if one element of the problem changed. "I need five 10 packs of plates to get 50 plates. What if plates came in packs of 8. How many would I need to buy?"
- Have your child find the mistake. For example, I bought 4 bags that each had 4 oranges in them. I have 8 orange altogether. Your child should be able to recognize that the answer should be 16 oranges and the correct way of solving it is using multiplication.
Giving your child a chance to think of different ways to solve a problem helps develop critical thinking skills and strengthens number sense. Keep it fun!
Math Apps of the Month - Fraction Wall
This is a repeat from last month but with third graders focused on this skill right now, we thought it would be good to repeat it. Fractions are an important concept in third grade, and building a solid understanding of fractions in third grade creates a strong foundation on which to build future fraction knowledge in later grades. This app is for both iOS and Android devices and helps make thinking visible when working with fractions.
