Important Information for You!

What a great first week!

Although it was a busy and exhausting week, it was a great first week! I want to take a quick minute to thank each and every one of you for jumping in and helping out when and where needed. It really was a team effort! I am always impressed at how quickly our little ones begin to learn routines and their way around the building. These first few weeks set the stage for the rest of the year. Keep up the great work!

DIBELS, NWEA, & KRA Assessments

This week we begin a three week stretch of formal assessments beginning with the DIBELS. Our Title I Paras will be administering this assessment Tuesday and Wednesday with make-ups taking place Thursday or into next week if needed.

The week after Labor Day you will be administering the NWEA Reading and Math Assessments in the library as we have in the past. We will not be setting up a 'practice test' this year based on feedback from teachers that this wasn't particularly useful. If you do want to give the practice test, you may check out the Chromebook cart and do so. Please watch for an email and schedule from Megan Campbell early next week with additional information and directions for how to 'name' the assessments.

The week of September 9th will be when the KRA 'Swat Team' will be moving from Hill to Siple to Thomson to complete some of the items on the KRA. You all received the overall schedule and I will be working on a building specific schedule next week. Remember, you may begin working on KRA assessment items at any time. If you have any questions about all of this, please see me.

Birthday Treats

Please, please, please include (on a somewhat regular basis) the reminder about non-food birthday treats. As a district this is going to be the policy due to the increased and varied food allergies we are seeing. If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

5D+ Self Assessments, Growth Plans, and Growth Plan Meetings

As you are aware, self assessments are due by this coming Friday. The following Friday, September 6th is when all Growth Plans are due. Please remember to review the documents from Mr. Lobban's office that I passed out on our PD Day and that were also sent out by Dinah Schultz. If you have any questions or would like to talk about your Growth Plan prior to submitting it, please let me know as I would be happy to sit down and talk with you about it. I will begin Growth Plan meetings the week of September 3rd. Please get with Anna to schedule your Growth Plan meeting.

DK & K Curriculum Meeting

As you are all aware, the first DK/K Curriculum Meetings with Dena and Julie will be held this week at Thomson from 4:15-6:15 p.m. This is the first of four scheduled meetings for the school year. Please remember that these are vital to the curriculum and assessment development process and the implementation process and are only beneficial if teachers are present and involved.

Building Google Calendar

Chris Lesko 'fixed' my Google Calendar, so all the building events through February have been added the the 'Thomson Elementary-Thomson Building Calendar'. Please ensure that you have joined this calendar so you can stay up to date on all upcoming events.

A Few Reminders:

  • Name Tags-Please continue to have your students were their name tags for the next couple of weeks. You have no idea how helpful these are when we are helping to ensure that students are headed in the right direction.
  • Extra Recess-If you are going to take your classroom outside for extra recess, please let the office know.
  • Parent Questions/Changes-We have had parents contacting teachers via email or remind with changes to busing/transportation, attendance, or general school questions not related to the classroom. If a parent contacts you with a question or change, please direct them to contact the office. We do not want you being 'the middle man' and something to be missed.
  • Sub Folders-Anna will put sub folders in your mailboxes today. Please have these back to the office as soon as possible, but no later than September 6th.

Video Below...

I was looking through YouTube for an inspirational video to include in this weeks newsletter and I came across the one below. Quite honestly, it brought tears to my eyes both times I watched it. I hope you will all take a few minutes to watch it.

Thank you for giving our kids a fighting chance. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you for giving your best every single day. Thank you for being a next level staff!

Quotes Worth Reading

“[Kids] don't remember what you try to teach them. They remember what you are.”

― Jim Henson

Be the ONE!

We have one week of school under our belt. Have you already identified one (or maybe more) that could use a little extra attention? This week I encourage you to implement the 2 X10 strategy with one student who is in need of some extra love.

Remember, the 2 x 10 Strategy is when you take 2 minutes a day for 10 days to talk one on one with a student and really get to know them. You will be surprised how much you can learn about a student and the bond you will create with them by doing this.
