Fish in a Tree
“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." - Albert Einstein
A Note From Mr. Nakano
Thank you for your attendance at last week's parent conferences. It was wonderful being able to conference with you and your children, as we set goals for the year. I have been seeing their growth already, and how proud they are in taking ownership of their work. The achievements they have made have already been amazing to see.
Global Read Aloud
This year, we are part of the Global Read Aloud, reading the book Fish in a Tree with over 500,000 students across the globe. Over the course of this next month, we will be communicating with other students in Canada, Brazil, and even a few schools here in Irvine, as we discuss the story together.
Fish in a Tree is about a young girl named Ally, who has dyslexia, and has always felt inhibited by her learning disabilities. As a result, she tends to be distractive and rarely asks for help. She soon will find comfort in other "outsider" friends and a new teacher who will help to shine light on her gifts. This is a wonderful story that also parallels well with the theme of acceptance that Maniac Magee provides.
Outdoor Ed Fundraiser Due
All orders for the 6th grade Outdoor Ed fundraiser need to be turned in on Monday, the 19th. Once the calculations are totaled and we subtract the amount earned from the balance of the students who participated in the fundraiser, we will start to send out the Outdoor Ed registration packets.

Unit 2 contains chapters that revolve more around Maniac's acceptance in the East End. He gains love and acceptance from a community and family that are a different skin color than him. Finally, he has a place to call home and we'll learn why they call him "Maniac." Soon, we'll learn of Maniac's obsession with Butterscotch Krimpets.
Science
Social Science
Based upon some our discussions, we might have some future police officers or lawyers in our classroom. We'll be wrapping it all up with a fun mock trial that brings it all together.
P.E.
When the students come back to the classroom to cool off, we are continuing the theme with silent, focused meditation with positive imagery.
Math
Unit 1
We will wrap up our final activity for this unit with the division of fractions and mixed numbers. On Thursday, the students will have their first unit test, covering the first six activities from their textbook.
On Tuesday and Wednesday, we will have review days, focusing on the frequently missed concepts during our learning and assessments for the first unit. We might even try some distance learning on Wednesday afternoon, too.
Please be aware that, as a unit test is a culmination assessment, there are no quiz retakes allowed. They are only allowed quiz retakes for the activity quizzes that focus on their learning targets.
