Weekly Update - September 16 - 20
Language Arts - Wallace
1st & 3rd Period Language Arts
This week, we'll begin to learn about our informational piece which will need to be completed in its final form on September 27th. Since we finished our shared reading, Children of the Dustbowl, last week, we'll explore the story of another group who faced extreme challenges, and we'll look for similarities between how the two groups overcame adversity. We'll also complete the Performance Series tests for reading and language arts this week. Of course, our poetry exploration will continue.
2nd & 6th Period Language Arts
This week, we'll begin to learn about our informational piece which will need to be completed in its final form on September 27th. We'll also look in-depth at introducing a topic in informational writing so as to create the best informational pieces possible. We'll continue to work on our shared reading, Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World, and we'll complete the Performance Series tests for reading and language arts this week. Of course, our poetry exploration will continue.
Social Studies - Cantrell
We have started our unit on the History of Latin America. The unit will last about 3 weeks. The study guide will be given out one day this week. Ask your child about the Aztecs, the Incas, Spanish Conquistidors, Mexican Independence, and the Cuban Revolution.
Math - Davis
Sept 16-20
Regular Math: We will prepare for our performance task and unit 1 test the first part of the week. The performance task for unit 1 will be completed in class on Thursday. The unit 1 test will be given Tuesday 9/24. Students WILL NOT have a math maintenance this week. However, they do have a unit review (3 pages) to complete by Friday.
A.C. Math - We will take our Unit 1 test on Monday. Tuesday we will begin our integers unit. This unit will include all of the 6th grade integer standards as well as 7th grade standards, which include computing with negative numbers.
POW - Students will have a new POW this week.
Tutoring:
I will be available for tutoring, as needed, during the following afternoons:
Monday: Tutoring is CANCELLED for this Monday
Wednesday: Regular Math 3:30-4:30
Please let me know BEFORE the tutoring day, if your child needs to stay.
Science - Selzer
This week we will continue our study of plate tectonics. We will be doing an activity to model the movement of the tectonic plates and observe a demonstration about convection currents. The study guide for the plate tectonics unit will be handed out this Monday, September 16th. We will have a formative quiz on Thursday September 19th. The Plate Tectonics Performance Task will be on Monday September 23rd and the Unit Test for Plate Tectonics will be on Tuesday September 24th.
Bowdoin and Jarrard ELA
Mrs. Bowdoin and Mrs. Jarrard's ELA Class: To prepare students for the next unit, we will be focusing on skills such as word families, point of view, theme, and correct word order. Students will also be learning to identify and correct run-on sentences in their writing. Students will continue to read in their book of choice for their independent reading.
