Winter Story Time Programs

Baby Story Time (Ages: infant to 2 years)

Thursdays at 10 a.m. at Harmony Library

Join us for reading, singing, bouncing, playing, and fun! This program is designed to be a weekly program for babies and caregivers to attend together. Begins January 25th.


Toddler Time (ages 2 - 3 ½)

Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. at Harmony Library and Fridays at 10:30 a.m. at Glocester Manton Library

Join us for stories, songs, finger plays, flannel activities, and social play to ready your toddler for preschool and beyond. Begins January 23rd at Harmony and January 26th at Glocester Manton.


Preschool and Kindergarten (3½ – 5)

Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. at Glocester Manton Library and Thursdays at 11 a.m. at Harmony Library

The preschool programs are designed to help your child develop skills that are fundamental building blocks for school readiness. Children will read stories, engage in movement/music activities, and do a craft. Children are encouraged to participate independently while caregivers remain in the library. Begins January 24th at Glocester Manton and January 25th at Harmony.

Children Programs

Make It Take It Craft
January 2 through January 31, library hours, Glocester Manton Library
Age Level: Children ages 3 and up**
**Children under 5 may need parental assistance.

Children ages 3 and up are invited to "drop in" to the Children's Room during the month of January for fun Winter crafts they can make and take home. Crafts will be available during library hours and will rotate on a bimonthly schedule.

Note: Registration is not necessary for this program.


Dream Big Gymnastics Academy

Friday, January 5, 10:30 a.m., Glocester Manton Library

Age Level: 18 months - 5 years old

Cabin Fever? Come on in and bounce, tumble, dance, and stretch with Dream Big Gymnastics Academy of Cumberland. Coaches will be on hand to lead children through basic gymnastics moves. There will also be an obstacle course for children to navigate.


Superheroes Unite@Michaels

Thursday, January 11, 10:30 a.m., Michaels at 371 Putnam Pike, Smithfield

Age Level: 2-5 years old

Up, Up, and Away! Join us for a special story time and craft at Michaels. We will read a super hero story and then decorate our own capes and masks.


Kids and Kazoos

Tuesday, January 16, 10:30 a.m., Harmony Library

Age Level: 2-5 years old

Celebrate National Kazoo Day! We will read a musical story, listen/dance to kazoo music, and even make and decorate a kazoo. We will also have professionally made kazoos to hand out and play.


Hot Wheels Racing
Saturday, January 20, 10:30 a.m., Glocester Manton Library

Age Level: 6 years old and up

Race your hot wheel cars at the Glocester Manton Library! Members of the Lincoln Johnny Lightening Race Club provide their super indoor track for a fun morning of learning and racing. Bring your Hot Wheels cars from home as well as use the race cars provided by the club! Play and learn from professionals. Don't miss this fun event!


Bee's World

Saturday, February 3, 11 a.m., Harmony Library

Age Level: 5 years old and up

Buzz into the amazing world of bees! Lori Dobson of the Rhode Island Beekeepers Association will give children an introduction into the world of bees. Children will be able to examine wooden hive parts and a scale model of a full hive. Honey sticks will be given to children to enjoy!

Tuesday Movie Matinee
Tuesday, January 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30, 2 p.m., Glocester Manton Library
Grab a snack and enjoy a new release movie on the big screen! The library shows new movies depending on the DVD release dates. The movies in January include:
  • January 2: Victoria and Abdul
  • January 9: Dunkirk
  • January 16: Battle of the Sexes
  • January 23: Loving Vincent
  • January 30: Alone in Berlin

Ukulele Workshop
Wednesday, January 3, 10, 17, 24, and 31, 6 p.m., Glocester Manton Library

Musician and teacher Tripp Hutchinson will guide folks through a variety of songs and lessons. This group is comprised of a variety of skill levels, but mostly beginner to intermediate attend regularly. It meets weekly to learn new techniques, share music, and have fun. There is a $5 weekly suggested donation to cover costs.

Cookbook Club
Monday, January 8, 6 p.m., Harmony Library

Help keep your New Year's Resolution for weight loss and health with this month's cookbook selection, Eat to Live Cookbook: 200 Delicious Nutrient-Rich Recipes for Fast and Sustained Weight Loss, Reversing Disease, and Lifelong Health by Joel Fuhrman.

The club works this way: every month, pick up a copy of that month's cookbook selection at the library. Choose a recipe to make and prepare it for the next month's meeting. We will sample each other's dishes and discuss our cooking experiences. If you would like to join the Cookbook Club, register at this website and then drop by the library to pick up a copy of the book.


Fearless Art

Wednesday, January 10 and January 24, 2 p.m., Glocester Manton Library

In January, we will continue to explore the art of drawing with ink. We will focus this month on the addition of color to inked drawings. All levels of art experience are welcome. All materials will be provided.


Writers' Support Group
Thursday, January 18, 6 p.m., Harmony Library

Read and share your personal projects at this monthly meeting. This adult group is open to writers in all genres.

Crochet Group
Monday, January 22, 6:30 p.m., Harmony Library

Beginners and more advanced crocheters are invited to learn and share their experience in a comfortable room for crochet and conversation! Ashley Ledoux, an experienced crocheter, will teach beginners and be available for assistance and advice.

Beginner's Yoga for a Healthy Year
Monday, January 22, January 29, Feb. 5, and Feb. 12, 6:30 p.m., Harmony Library

If you would like to join the 36 million Americans doing yoga, sign up for this four-week series. The first class is free and have a $5 suggested donation for each subsequent class.

Rhode Island Shipwrecks

Tuesday, January 30, 6 p.m., Harmony Library

Charlotte Taylor, an archaeologist at the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission, will be in the library to discuss her book, Rhode Island Shipwrecks. Rhode Island has more shipwrecks per square mile than any other state. In her book, Taylor has captured dramatic images of many 19th and 20th Century disasters. She also works closely with the Rhode Island Marine Archaeology Project, a nonprofit organization that is studying the Revolutionary War fleet that once visited Narragansett Bay.


Attila the Hun and His Influence on Western Civilization

Wednesday, January 31, 1:30 p.m., Glocester Manton Library

Guest speaker Ron Barks will discuss the legacy of Attila the Hun. Born a barbarian, educated in Rome, Attila's Huns and their pagan Asian allies fought the Western Roman Empire and its Christian allies in Europe's first World War, the outcome of which shaped Western Civilization as we know it. This presentation is free and open to the public.

Receive one-on-one instruction in learning how to use a computer, set up an email account, and search the Internet.

Resume Workshop

Need help creating our updating your resume? Attend this one-on-one workshop. Bring a written draft of your resume and a USB flash drive to save and/or print your resume.

Note: Participants must be able to type their own resume.


Career Exploration Workshop

Are you thinking about a new career or want a career change? Do you need to practice for an occupational exam? With your library card and access to the Glocester Libraries’ website, you can explore careers, take practice exams, and prepare for graduate school admission exams at your own pace. At this one-on-one workshop, learn how to register for an account, find the resources for your quest, and advance your career goals.
