ESOL Tip of the Week
Culturally Responsive Teaching
Last week in the Weekly Knot Mr. Reap highlighted the importance of culturally responsive teaching. In his message he called on us to:
"Get to know the culture of your students by researching their backgrounds, the countries they are from, their languages, values, behaviors, beliefs, holidays, traditions, customs, and foods. When educators possess profound cultural information about their students, they are better able to discern behaviors and to provide effective instructional strategies. "

CultureGrams (part of our district's library subscriptions) is a wonderful resource to use to research students' home countries. The site contains a plethora of information on every country in the world, including information on language, food, religion, family, greetings, and gestures, just to name a few. When visiting the site, click on world edition to begin navigating the site.
