We need each other more than ever right now! This month let's focus on reaching out to connect with others and doing our best to be a good friend. Our acts of kindness and connection ripple out and impact so many more people than we realise - and they also boost our own happy hormones too! In stressful times people around us may be feeling the strain, so let's try to keep calm, take time to listen and show compassion.

K-2 Math Formative Math Assessments
1. A formal mid-year assessment is not required and will not be distributed by the state.
2. A repository of formative assessment tasks with rubrics is available located here.
3. Board Policy states that students should be provided ongoing assessment and part of the intended purposes is to provide information about the progress of each student for instructional adaptations. Using tasks as needed throughout the year can provide teachers with a clearer picture of what students understand. With standards based grading, it is also more manageable to complete the formative assessments that correlate with the standards assessed on the progress reports.
4. The Formative and Instructional Tasks from Tools4Teachers can also be used as formative assessment.
5. A summative assessment will be distributed in March.
6. Teachers need to document student performance on formative assessments to show progress. Documentation can also be shared with the next grade level teacher at the end of the year. A sample data collection sheet can be found on p. 22 at this link.
7. If you need a refresher, there is a webinar recording (9/2019) that talks through the process.

The science of reading—what does that really mean? Discover the features of instruction and assessment grounded in the science of reading. Two webinars are available as well as additional resources on the science of reading. View these two webinars and the additional resources, write a 1-2 page summary of the information you learned for 4 hours (.4) of literacy credit.

Has this podcast "wet" your appetite for more about comprehension and digital text? If so you will find this blog post interesting from literacy expert, Tim Shanahan. For literacy credit (.2) the podcast and blog post can be summarized in a one page plan that includes what you have learned and how this knowledge will impact your classroom practice.
