News from the Nest
Issue #87 Week of September 10th
A note from Mrs. Rosenberg
Dear Ellis School Families,
I am writing to let you know that I will be going out on maternity leave starting mid-October. My husband, son, and I are extremely excited to welcome a baby girl this fall, and I have decided to take a 12-week leave in an effort to get to know our new baby and to adjust to being a mother of two children.
Ms. Connelly and I have been working hard to ensure that this transition goes as smoothly as possible, and I am confident that my replacement during this time, Mr. Chris Asbell, will do a fantastic job of filling my role in my absence. Please see his introduction below so that you can get to know him a little bit better!
I absolutely love being a part of your children’s lives and cannot wait to see you all again upon my return in January. I appreciate all of the support that many of you have already shown me after hearing the news of my pregnancy.
Warmly,
Delaney Rosenberg
About Mr. Asbell
Mr. Asbell was born and raised in Rochester, New Hampshire. Fly fishing the lakes and streams of the Great North Woods, skiing and snowboarding in the White Mountains, and camping and hiking throughout New England helped to grow his passion for the outdoors. Mr. Asbell has an 11 year old son named Peregrine that joins him on most outdoor adventures. Mr. Asbell graduated from Stonehill College with a B.A. in Elementary Education (K-8) and a minor in Environmental Studies.
He started his teaching career at Barnard School teaching grades 5-8 Science, 8th grade Social Studies, and 5-8 Health. He developed his curriculum to include project-based learning with a focus on place-based learning. Ecology lessons were integrated in the outdoor setting rather than from the textbook. It was there Mr. Asbell earned his Masters of Science from Lesley University in the Ecological Teaching and Learning program. For his thesis project, He worked with the South Hampton, NH community to create the Living Lab School Garden with Heron Pond Farm, students, teachers, and families. After twelve years, Mr. Asbell moved to Dover, NH and started working at Somersworth Middle School.
He taught 7th grade science, hydroponics and aquaponics, and was a Garden Champion in the Plant For Growth Community Garden. Mr. Asbell was selected into the Granite State Leadership Academy which has partnered with SNHU to create a CAGS program. This program led to Mr. Asbell's role as an assistant principal at Rochester Middle School in 2020-21.
Mr. Asbell transferred to the private school Terramor Academy for the 2021-22 school year. He became the head science naturalist working with grades K-5. He integrated the outdoors across the curriculum with students as they learned from their place in Lee, NH.
Most recently, Mr. Asbell joined The Ellis School staff as grades 7+8 science educator. Here, he has brought a new life to the greenhouse and surrounding grounds of the Ellis School campus by bringing students outside and getting their hands dirty with garden projects to grow food and habitat for the local species of Fremont, NH.
