Hello Families,
The motto for this week in school is:
The cure for boredom is curiosity!
Students don't enjoy being bored because being bored is boring. Curiosity is far more fun! Here are three easy tools to empower students to tap into their curiosity and give themselves a better experience.
1. Expectations
Our intentions or expectations are important because they can influence our experiences. Rather than go to an event or a class expecting to be bored, go expecting to learn.
2. Engagement
Learning requires participation. Get engaged in the lesson by asking questions, taking notes, and listening! An engaged mind is far more entertained.
3. Energy
Think about the energy you bring with you or how you "Show Up!" Sitting up and facing the speaker increases our focus and attention. On the flip side, slouching and avoiding eye contact can actually make us feel tired and bored.
Finally, if you find your children are bored at home, determine if they have been doing "input" or "output" activities. For example, if they have been reading, playing video games, or watching TV, those are input activities - they are passively receiving information. If they are bored, it may be time for them to switch it up and participate in some "output" activities where they are actively creating, or moving, such as writing, exercising, playing outside, or doing some imaginative play or art.
We all experience boredom on occasion, but empowering our children with strategies that can help them overcome their boredom can teach them how to create better experiences for themselves.
Wishing you a wonderful week,
Danna Evans
