From the Principal

Greetings Benninghoven Families,

As we begin shifting into the fall season, we have many opportunities to come together as a community and support our students. Various clubs will begin this month including Student Council, Art Club, Lettering Club, and Mathletics. We will also join our SMNW neighbors in celebrating homecoming during the annual parade on October 4th at 1:00. This is a fun day for our whole community and it excites our future cougars! We also have opportunities to gather for conferences, PTA, field trips, and our annual Halloween celebration this month. If you have not reached out to your child's teacher about an upcoming conference time, be sure to do so. Conferences are an important part of building our partnerships between home and school.

This month our students will participate in School Families for the first time. This is a new opportunity that our teachers have been working diligently to provide for our students. Every Benninghoven student and staff member will be in a family. Each family is lead by a staff member. Families include students from each grade level and are made up of approximately 12 students. Students will remain in the same family their entire time at Benninghoven; they could be with the same adult from Kindergarten through 6th grade. We will use this time to focus on character traits and building relationships. School families will help us achieve our goal of ensuring that every child has a safe and supportive relationship with a staff member at school, and that we build a culture based on our Benninghoven CARES traits of Cooperation, Assertion, Responsibility, Empathy, and Self Control. We are excited to begin this new tradition!

We want to thank our Knights community for a fantastic start to the school year! We appreciate your partnership, support, and engagement in our school. #uKnighted512

Take Care Knights,

Dr. Gonser

Horizon Award Winner

We are excited to share that our very own Miss Fingalsen has been honored as the Horizon Award winner for the the entire Shawnee Mission School District! The Horizon Award recognizes outstanding new educators. Miss Fingalsen will now represent our school district at the state level. Congratulations Miss Fingalsen!

Halloween Classroom Celebrations

We will celebrate Halloween at Benninghoven on October 31st from 1:45- 2:50PM. The celebration will begin with our annual Halloween parade. Families can view the parade from the bleachers in the gym or the circle drive. All students will walk through the gym and along the front sidewalk. The circle drive will be closed so guests can stand in the circle drive to view the parade. Please do not park in the circle drive or move cones being used to block the circle drive. Please do not park in a location that is not a parking space. This results in unsafe situations and prohibits dismissal at the end of the day. If all parking spots are full, please park in the east lot at SMNW.

Following the parade, all students will return to their classrooms for some festive activities. Families are invited to attend the classroom portion of our celebration and you do not need to be MVP trained to participate in classroom parties. Younger siblings are welcome as long as they are closely supervised. Please know that there will not be extra treats, etc. available for younger siblings. If your student has a food allergy, please make sure the classroom teacher is aware before the class party. This is one of the few school activities that includes food. We will end the celebrations promptly at 2:50. This is so that dismissal can occur as normal. Your child's classroom teacher will share more information about individual classroom celebrations.

Students will have 5-10 minutes to change into their costumes before the parade begins. Costumes must be able to be put on over clothing. Students will not be excused from class to change into their costumes. Students can wear their costumes throughout the day if they are not a disruption to the classroom environment and the student can still learn while wearing the costume. Inflatable costumes or especially large costumes cannot be worn all day. Students will be asked to remove these costumes for the school day. Face paint also cannot be worn all day. Students will be asked to remove face paint during the school day. The following items will not be permitted during the school day or during the parade:

  • masks
  • fake weapons
  • blood or gruesome effects
  • any inappropriate or offensive content

Please review your child's costume for these elements before sending it to school. Administration can exclude costume content on an individual basis and will do so if necessary, however we prefer that the need does not arise. Our goal is to have a safe and fun celebration for our students of all ages.

From the PTA

There is still time to join your Benninghoven PTA! You can now join quickly and easily ONLINE through MemberHub (there is a small fee that you will incur to use this service). Joining the PTA does not commit you to volunteering - though we'd LOVE for you to get involved, becoming a member simply says that you support your child's school and what our national, state, and local PTAs do. Please see the link on our PTA website and join today!

Butter Braids Fundraiser

Thanks to those of you who participated in our Butter Braid fundraiser! Our student sellers knocked it out of the park and we have made nearly $9,500 to help fund field trips, science enrichment, family events, teacher grants, and MORE! Butter Braid pick up is Tuesday, October 1st after school in the gym from 3:15 - 5:45. Please be sure to make arrangements to pick up your student's orders that day as the items are frozen and we do not have storage for items not picked up. THANK YOU again for your participation in this annual fundraiser!

Watch D.O.G.S.

WatchDOGS is an initiative of the National Center for Fathering and is aimed at providing positive male role models for students. WatchDOGS are fathers, uncles, grandfathers, and other father figures who spend one or more days volunteering in our school by helping with arrival or dismissal, monitoring in the lunch room, helping in the classroom, working with groups of students, and hanging out at recess. Volunteering as a WatchDOG is a great way to spend time at school with your student! WatchDOGS may volunteer up to once per month per student and may choose either a morning or an afternoon shift. Sign up on the PTA website (click on the WatchDOGS logo at the top.)
