Happy Autumn!
Dear Grundy Learning community;
Fall is in the air and Grundy students are in the spirit of holiday giving! We just started our Thanksgiving Food Drive that is being organized by our Social Worker, Mrs. Parrish. A letter was emailed home with suggestions for food items to be donated. These food baskets will directly help Grundy families during the holidays. The generosity of our community is always outstanding! Thank you in advance one and all!
We have many activities happening during the month of November. The Trial of Goldilocks will be scheduled for our 5th graders. Our honorable Veteran's Day parade will be on 11/10. Wear your Support the Troops shirt or red, white and blue to honor those who served. The PTA will be having the Book Fair on 11/16 and 11/17 and on 11/14 Grundy will sing the National Anthem at the Stony Brook Seawolves basketball game. Spirit Day is 11/18 and we will wear mismatched items. The kindergarten Thanksgiving Day Parade will be 11/23 and grade 5 pictures and retakes will be on 11/28. More information about all of these activities and more will be emailed to all of you or posted on our webpage.
Below you will find some photos and information about each of our grade levels and many of the activities that occurred during the month of October. Happy Fall!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amato
Halloween Parade
News from Kindergarten
Kindergarten has been full of many exciting things! The students have adjusted well to their new school and love learning about numbers and letters. We had a visit from the Holbrook Fire Department where they taught us about Fire Safety. It was great that we were able to practice crawling, touching doors with the back of our hand, and go into the fire trucks!
For the first time, we had Kindergarten Fall Centers to celebrate Halloween! Each student was able to pick their own pumpkin from our very own Grundy Pumpkin Patch! Each class had some parents come in to help with our centers. We were able to paint our pumpkins, create a skeleton and sequence the life cycle of a pumpkin! We were so excited for our Halloween parade and party. We had a great time marching for all to see! Thanks for all our Halloween goodies!
News from 1st Grade
We are off to a fantastic start in first grade. We are learning and having so much fun each day! We have begun launching into our readers and writers workshop where we are learning and practicing the routines of great readers and writers. In math, we have begun adding and subtracting while looking for the whole and part of an equation. In science, we are enjoying seeing the world as scientists. We are learning about different forms of matter and their properties. We have so much fun spotting different forms of matter in our classrooms each day. In social studies, we are learning about being good citizens. We have learned that good citizens help others, take care of the earth, are kind to animals, act respectfully and follow the rules. In October, we learned about fire safety. We had a fantastic visit from Firefighter Neil and his firefighter friends. He told us how to be safe and he showed us his fire truck. We had a great time! We look forward to more learning and fun in November!

News from 3rd Grade
The third grade students have been learning many new and exciting lessons in all academic areas. Through our Schoolwide Literacy Launch Unit we have been working on developing reading and writing strategies so that all students can become better readers and writers. The students enjoy the variety of literature books we read in class and are working hard to expand their thinking while reading and writing. Students should be reading every night to practice the skills they have learned in class. In our Math lessons we have been reviewing place value to the thousands numbers, adding and subtracting three digit numbers with regrouping, rounding numbers to the hundreds place, and attacking word problems. We finished Geography, our first unit in Social Studies. All students are encouraged to memorize their address and telephone number. We have started Chapter 5 in Science, Earth Changes. We have discussed the landforms on Earth in lesson one. In lesson two we discussed the many natural disasters that change the Earth’s surface and the effects these have on our planet. We will be learning about weathering and erosion in lesson three. The students enjoy time in class sharing their ideas and working together to complete their work.
News from 4th Grade
The fourth-grade service project for the month of October is to collect candy for a soup kitchen in the city. Bags will be made and distributed on Thanksgiving Day. What a great way to finish off a Thanksgiving meal! The students are continuing their study of the geography of New York and New York’s natural resources. The students are also writing personal narratives and learning how to use various strategies when reading fiction and non-fiction.

Our visit to the Federal Courthouse in Central Islip enriched our social studies unit on the government. In addition, our students are working hard on their Trial of Goldilocks roles in preparation for their performances early in November. It is going to be a great show.
The 5th grade service project will also begin in early November. We will be collecting gently used Halloween costumes for families in need. The collection will run November 1st-8th.
News from the Reading Department
Calling all K-2 parents! You should be receiving information from your child’s classroom teacher about a great reading resource.
Raz-Kids is a fun and interactive program you can use at home to support your beginning reader! Your child will be able to listen to books, read with vocabulary and pronunciation support; all while reading independently. This program will help students improve their reading skills by listening for modeled fluency, re-reading for practice, recording their reading and checking comprehension with quizzes.
Your child was given a reading level on which he/she can begin. This level will increase throughout the year as your child improves in decoding and comprehension. Please note this is at an independent reading level. At this level, your child should be reading with ease and minimal struggling with unknown words. As your child paces through the books on the site, he/she will be moved onto the next level.
Raz-kids is a great way for you to support reading literacy with and for your child.
