Black History Advisory Lesson
After an advisory lesson on Black History, students in each grade were assigned an area of the arts to focus on and research. Freshmen focused on music, Sophomores focused on film, Juniors focused on literature/poetry, and the Seniors focused on performing arts. From there, each advisory was able to research an influential person and decorate their advisory classroom door promoting their assigned genre. This activity was created by students as an educational competition. The winning advisory was Mrs. Ayala's freshman advisory, who researched the singer, SZA. There was a tie for second place between Mrs. Mann's senior advisory, who researched poet, Amanda Gorman and Mr. Hibson's sophomore advisory, who researched actor, Chadwick Boseman.

Meet Your National Honor Society Peer Tutors
NHS members are starting a new peer tutoring program, with NHS members available for help in blocks A1, A2, A4, B1, B2, and B3 in the Learning Lounge. The peer tutoring program provides a great way for students to connect with an upperclassman peer who has taken the class and is familiar with the subject material. Interested students can check in with their study hall teacher during any of the blocks listed above to connect with an NHS tutor.
Bathroom Vape Sensors
Bathrooms at MSMHS are now equipped with Triton vape detector devices. After piloting the use of these vape detectors during the first semester, they have now been installed in all bathrooms. MSMHS is committed to fostering a safe and healthy environment for our students and we recognize the increased use of vape products among youth as a public health concern. The sensors alert the main office when vaping is detected, and administration has been using a consistent process for responding. Students caught vaping or in possession of any vape products will participate in intervention work and new learning on the dangers of vaping as well as serve a school issued consequence. We are partnering with Groton Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention and are using online teaching programs designed for teenagers as an educational component of our response.
February Field Trips
AP Art History Class at Yale
AP Art History class spent the day on the Yale campus, looking at art and architecture. They started their day looking at the "Lipstick (Ascending) on Caterpillar Tracks", a sculpture created in 1969 by Class Oldenburg that is located inside Morse College, one of Yale's residential colleges.
From there, they walked through campus, stopping to look at notable works of art and architecture, including the façade of Sterling Memorial Library (designed by James Gamble Rogers in 1930), Maya Lin's monument to 20 years of Women at Yale ("The Women's Table, 1993), and the remarkable Beineke Library building (designed by Gordon Bunshaft in 1963) before arriving at the Yale University Art Gallery. There, they had an educator-led experience in the galleries, looking closely at three works of art and engaging in looking, thinking, imagining, and writing activities. Two students gave spontaneous gallery talks in front of objects in the African collection - works similar to ones they have studied and will teach to their peers later this week.
Aquaculture Business at Ideal Fish
The Aquaculture Business and Entrepreneurship class took a field trip to visit Ideal Fish in Waterbury, CT, one of the largest aquaculture facilities in the country. They received a full tour of the facility and learned about the challenges of running a business that produces hundreds of thousands of fish a year.
