EXCELLENCE, INNOVATION, CHARACTER
Week of March 6, 2017
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear Friends, Family, and FSA Supporters:
What a great week that we had with many wonderful achievements and many great events! Please enjoy reading the full details on this issue of our school newsletter.
FSA Cultural Cafe was Lots of Fun!
A big THANK YOU you to all of our teachers and parent volunteers for organizing many wonderful events for our students. Yesterday's Cultural Cafe was a perfect example of the friendship within our community! It is ALWAYS great to come together and share food from different cultures as we watch and enjoy the many talents of our wonderful students. I personally think that the amazing dance of our kindergarten students was the highlight of the program. Congratulations to these kids and their parents for the awesome performance! Congratulations to all other students with many different talents as well! We love you!
Our High School Students Continue to Impress Us
After winning 3rd place at their first ever Science Olympiad competition and advancing to state level last week, the high school students have now won 1st place as a team in two different high school level math tournaments this past weekend! Considering that this is the first year of our high school, the future of our high school program is only brighter. I am also pleased to share with you that we observe a great increase in high school enrollment numbers for next school year. We project that we will double our high school enrollment numbers for next school year. Way to go!
Model UN Makes School History!
What an amazing achievement from our wonderful Model UN team this past week! Yes, we always knew that we had a very strong Model UN Team! However, we truly did not expect to win 1st place as a team at the Coastal Georgia Model UN competition. What an amazing performance from our students! Great students and coaches with such BIG HEARTS! Different than the other competitions we join, this special trophy will stay at our school till another school wins 1st place in Model UN as a team. We surely will not make their job easy! :)
FSA Annual Fund
They say that time flies when you're having fun, and that is certainly the case at FSA as we turn the calendar to March; our school year will be over before we know it!
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank those families who provided tax-deductible contributions in conjunction with the FSA Annual Fund this fall, and invite those who refrained from doing so please consider making a contribution to help us achieve 100% participation and reach our ultimate goal of raising $150,000 to enhance several important student offerings here at FSAPS.
Several wonderful FSA parents approached me to say that they would prefer to make their gift in conjunction with tax season, and we certainly invite those gifts. Donations can be made by clicking HERE.
Already, funds raised in the fall are being put to good use! I'm delighted to say the following actions are in motion to honor those areas that we identified as strategic funding priorities for our school.
Athletics Program. A new basketball coach has been hired to lead our JV team. Under this new leadership, our players are practicing regularly and show great promise in the GISA Conference. We love the sense of school spirit that has blossomed in conjunction with the addition of our new basketball team and we are so proud of our team!
Greenhouse. With the completion of our camous master plan, the permits are now being obtained for the new greenhouse location, and our target date to unveil a new FSA greenhouse is August 2017. Please stay tuned for this exciting new development!
Innovation Lab. Recognizing the importance of providing adequate workspace for our students to innovate, we look forward to adding a brand new Innovation Lab to the campus in August 2017. We are working with a Business Advisory Committee to consider creative ways to design this student for maximum student enjoyment and learning.
Performing/Visual Arts. New courses such as, “Introduction to Art” and other age-appropriate music classes will be added as electives next fall to support our growing high school program.
Program Enhancements. Thanks to one family’s generous donation, Fulton Science Academy launched a brand new “Environmental Conservation Club” for interested students. Additionally, the school expanded our anti-bullying campaign to include the much-coveted “Don’t Be a Monster” interactive presentation in October 2016 and, next month, FSA will host the award-winning program, “Rachel’s Challenge.”
Moving forward, in order for us to retain competitive tuition rates and provide the level of education that our families have come to know, love, and expect, we will continue to encourage charitable gifting. These philanthropic investments from individuals, companies, and foundations, will be a key component in our desire to become a leading STEAM school in the nation.
On behalf of everyone here at FSA, thank you for being such a valuable part of our FSA family. Here's to a great week ahead!
Sincerely,
Kenan Sener
Principal

Dr. Seuss Day Fun!
Cultural Cafe was a blast!
Our annual Cultural Cafe event on Sunday, March 5, was a fantastic success. Students, parents, teachers, faculty and families all enjoyed celebrating the wonderful diversity of our school. Everyone sampled delicious traditional foods ranging from various salads to samosas to dolmades and wraps. Along with the cuisine, spectators were regaled with various performances by our talented students. There were cultural dances, songs, and the playing of musical instruments.
Thank you so much to our wonderful community for making the event a smashing success!
Please Arrive On Time to Avoid Tardies
While every effort is made to provide a safe and expeditious drop off for our students in the morning, we kindly request that families please aim to arrive at school between 7:30-7:45 a.m. This will eliminate your child's need to secure a tardy pass, minimize interruption to other students who have started their lesson plans, etc.
Thank you for your support.

Character Ed: March - Perseverance
What is perseverance?
1. Staying with the task and not giving up.
2. Showing commitment, pride and a positive attitude in completing tasks.
3. Trying again and again and again.
4. Being patient and willing to work hard.
What are ways you can show perseverance?
1. When you are near the end of race and struggling to finish, find a burst of energy to cross the finish line.
2. Try a new sport or skill that is difficult and don’t quit.
3. Study and work hard to improve your grades.
4. Save up your money and do extra chores to buy something special.
5. Help a younger child learn to ride a bicycle or play a new game.
6. Spend hours practicing to play an instrument.
7. Always finish what you start. Do not give up when things get tough.
8. Try something again, even if you failed the first time. Remember you had to learn to walk before you could run!
Classroom Activities
Second Grade Planet Research Projects are OUT of this WORLD!
Students in send grade completed an extension project to go along with our Earth, Moon, Sun and Stars unit in class.
At home, students become an expert on a particular planet. They gathered information and created a presentation to share with their peers. Some students used powerpoint, created travel brochures, wrote informational texts, or even created a comic strip or a song to share everything they had researched.
Seconnd grade teachers were blown away by the professionalism of their students during the presentation portion of this learning activity. It was great to see the students so excited! Students also prepared a 3-D Model of their planet to display with their research. You can see these models on display in the Elementary Science Exhibit in our main hallway at FSA.
Stop by and learn a little (or a lot) about the planets in our Solar System!
Butterfly Observations
Students in second grade have started one of their favorite STEAM projects of the year. Beginning last week, students have been observing caterpillars. They discussed the life cycle of a butterfly, and are hopeful that they will see the full life cycle happen in their very own second-grade classrooms!
This past week students observed caterpillars eating... eating... eating... and GROWING! On Tuesday, students were able to see the caterpillars move to the top of our cup and begin forming their chrysalis. Students are so excited to see what will happen in the next few weeks. They're keeping track in their observation journals.
While students wait for the butterflies to hopefully come, they will be creating butterfly garden blueprints. Students will use their math and engineering skills to design a butterfly garden they think these butterflies would enjoy on FSA's campus. It is going to be a very exciting experience!
Investigation of Leaf Stomata Lab
Last week, seventh-grade Biology class students learned about the structure of a leaf and how stomata have an important role in the processes of photosynthesis and respiration. Students examined the leaf stomata under a microscope with the technique of making clear nail polish impressions of it. They generated and tested a hypothesis of their choice about how leaf stomata condition might vary during the day (when light is available) and during the night. Students drew a sketch of stomata they saw under a microscope and labeled the parts.

Club News
Broadcast Journalism Club
The FSA News Team is all about ”stories that matter.” News team members are learning what it is like to be a broadcast journalist from pitching, researching, and presenting on camera various stories around campus.
Equipped with their trusty news reporter notepads and FSA News press passes they are always in search of a good story!
The Club is capped at 12 members and while they are focused on “getting the story,” some members of the news team are focused on the technical side of a broadcast. As you have seen with our first broadcast, the goal is to mimic an actual news program.
Students are working with IPads, smart phones and various apps for production. As they move from broadcast to broadcast, they are tweaking their equipment, apps and skillsets to always improve on the last broadcast. Following each broadcast, students use one of their sessions and, in an editorial meeting, talk about the recent show and also discuss what’s coming up next.
For every broadcast, students will have a different pair of anchors…this is designed so the team members get a feel for being “on camera.” The students are generally working on stories in advance and are learning key interviewing skills. They are also learning how to frame shots, work with a teleprompter, and be exposed to the different types of formats for news stories.
While students have lots of fun in broadcast, they are also dedicated, focused and work hard to produce a quality news program that you can enjoy. So, if you have a story to cover, please email: fsanews@fultonscienceacademy.org and we will consider your pitch.
Mrs. Rookmin Maharaj leads this Club, a former radio and television journalist.
Fitness and Fun is more than play
Students in first grade love exercising because they understand that moving and doing any physical activity will help them improve school attendance and enhance academic performance.
It is also important to recognize that kids who exercise have greater self-esteem and better self-image, along with prevention or delays in the development of many chronic diseases (e.g., heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension) and the it helps the promotion of good health.
Besides, children who are active report fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and a better overall mood. Exercise helps improve motor coordination and enhances the development of various motor performance skills.
So parents, make sure your kids are up and moving; it is not just about eating healthy.

With the exception of the FSA's Summer Leadership Camp (which is open to FSA students only), our camps are open to ALL Georgia students.
Please CLICK HERE to see a detailed list of camps that will be offered at our school this summer.
Would you like to coordinate a home visit? If so, please read on...
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.

Bus Survey for 2017-2018 school year
We recognize that some of our families could benefit from a bus service to transport their child to and from school each day.
We need to gather information from each of the interested families and pass it along to the bus companies that we are looking into. The bus companies will then determine the bus routes and bus stops.
- The cost is about $175/student per month with a $25 sibling discount.
- The bus will have the students at the school by 7:40 a.m. and there will be one afternoon transport, leaving the school at 4:30 p.m.
If you are interested, fill out the linked form below by March 15, 2017.
Once we have the information from all of the interested families, it will be shared with the bus companies. We will share the outcome as soon as we can. Thank you!
