Project Lead the Way

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) is a pathway of classes designed to get students interested in STEM careers. Many of the classes are dual credit classes and offer the opportunity to earn Kirkwood Community College credit or four year college credit, at certain schools. This trimester was a busy trimester for the PLTW classes at West High. Mr. Herman and Mr. Wymer took the Environmental Sustainability PLTW classes to the Iowa City Water Treatment Plant on Wed. Nov. 4th . Mr. Martz took his Introduction to Engineering classes to Rockwell Collins for an engineering tour on November 12th. Mr. Kahler’s Aerospace Engineering classes were busy making airfoils, studying GPS Augmentation, and doing some GPS Surveying. Mr. Audia’s Principle of Engineering (POE) classes utilized the good fall weather to build alternative energy cars that were powered by solar energy or by hydrogen fuel cells. Students in POE will be participating in the nationwide Hour of Code in December and are looking forward to building apps and games using the new upcoming Star Wars movie characters.
