Happy Holidays from the Franklin Staff

Principal's Message

Happy Holidays! The holiday seasons brings about time with family and friends and we wish you the very best these next couple weeks. The New Years' season also brings about a time for resolutions. Granted, some involve getting to the gym more often or eating healthier and if you're like me those last a couple weeks before resorting back to old behavior. If you're able to stick to those, I'm very envious. Resolutions can also be made for how we function and operate as a school. We value the individuality that comes with each of our students and how we can work within our structure to help each of those needs. We are excited and welcome the break, but look forward to the new year and partnering together to instruct, encourage, push, and support one another. Our very best to you.

Dismissing Your Student

It would be greatly appreciated to give our Attendance and Main Office as much notice as possible if you need your child dismissed during the day. Our handbook indicates a minimum of 90 minutes prior to requested dismissal time. It's difficult for our office staff to get students and their gather their belongings and not disrupting class. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

8th Grade Ski Trip

This week the 8th grade students were given information for the annual ski trip to Sundown Mountain in Dubuque. This year's date is Friday, January 29. (Hopefully by then we'll have snow). This is a great event every year for novice or avid skiers. Students who have never skied before are given a lesson and will be ready to take the slopes shortly after. Please look over the letter and contact Mr. Jeffords if you have any questions.

End of 1st Semester

Upon return we have two weeks until the end of the first semester. The official end of semester is Friday, January 15. Upon finalizing of grades and comments we will mail out student progress reports. Our Period 6 (Homeroom) time will be revamped for the two weeks when we return to work with our students on completing work, providing support, and reviewing our PARRT expectations.

As you review your child's grades the next couple weeks please be sure to contact teachers to develop a plan to support your child.

Draft of 2016-17 Calendar Released

The Cedar Rapids Community School District is inviting input from parents, staff, and community members regarding a draft of the 2016-2017 District calendar. There are many pieces that mirror the 2015-2016 calendar, including start and end dates; the Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks; and holidays.

The biggest change is in the frequency and time for professional learning. The committee studied the research on Professional Learning Communities and quality professional learning (which indicates that frequent and regular Professional Learning Community (PLC) and professional learning time is optimal), and is recommending a consistent weekly late start to the school day every Wednesday. The morning time would be used by teachers for professional learning and PLC work. Supervision at all of the elementary schools would be provided on Wednesday for families that wish to use this accommodation.

From a staff perspective we are excited about the opportunities we have for professional development and collaboration. This year's Wednesday early releases has been beneficial for our staff to purposefully plan and coordinate lesson plans. Next year's proposed calendar will provide us even more time to do similar endeavors and more, all for the purpose of helping our students.

Iowa Assessments

Before long students will be settling in to take the Iowa Assessments. The window for assessments is February 29-March11. Our format for this year's tests will be similar with students test Monday, January 29-February 3. The following days will be used for make-ups. More information will follow.

One thing we try to do for our students is to provide snacks during the Assessments. This is made possible through the generous donations of our parents. There will be a sign-up for parents willing to donate items such as Gogurt, bananas, string cheese, and granola bars. We're also offering an incentive for students to be here on all testing days. Students will earn a soda during lunch. We'll be accepting soda donations as well. Stay tuned!

Dressing Appropriately

If the early and large amount of expected snow is any indication this could be a long winter. With the colder temperatures we want to remind our families to make sure students are dressing appropriately. Students will remain outside before school unless the temperature is below 25 degrees. We've noticed a number of students not properly dressed for the cold temperatures. We want to keep our students healthy.

Receipts, Receipts, Receipts

We're approaching the Holiday season. This means many of you will be hosting family and friends for breakfast, brunches, lunches, and dinners. We would appreciate, if you shop at Hy-Vee, to save your receipts and bring them into the main office. Annually we are receive a monetary award based on the dollar amount of receipts we collect.

We will be doing a classroom challenge with Hy-Vee receipts from January 11-15. If you wish to save the receipts until then please do so. Your help is great appreciated.

Concession Help Needed

We try open our concession stand during our sporting events. This is a great way for our PTA to make money. Each event we tend to make over $100. This adds up and provides great support to our students and school. In order for us to run the concession stand we need at least one adult willing to volunteer their time. Without an adult we are unable to have the stand open. Please see the sign up on the link below for the remaining home events. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Friends of Franklin

Want to support Franklin? Check out our page that has information about our Friends of Franklin. We are extremely appreciative for the amount of support that our PTA has provided us. If you've seen our video announcement system in the school it was made partially possible because of the PTA purchasing 4 TVs.
