March Newsletter
Elton Gregory Middle School
March Madness Attendance Challenge
Our school's goal is to reach an attendance rate of 95%. Students with an attendance rate of 95% miss no more than two days of school on average each month. During the month of March we would like to encourage great attendance and being on time to class.
Each week during the month we will have gift card drawings for students who were in class all five days in the week. We will have an additional drawing for students who are on time to each class during the week. On time is considered in class with all materials and seated when the tardy bell rings.
Giftcards will be for businesses such as Trampoline Zone in Bend, the Cascade Swim Center, and other local businesses.
Juntos
Elton Gregory will be hosting a Juntos program this spring in our school library that will meet weekly on Mondays from 5:30-8pm. Call our school office for more information.
Vaping -- What you need to know
Vaping is not harmless. Vapes can contain nicotine, just like other tobacco products. Nicotine is highly addictive and is especially harmful for young people's developing brains. A single vape pod can contain as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. Vapes can also contain ultrafine particles and chemicals that could be harmful to lungs. Vapes are still so new that long term health effects from their use are still relatively unknown.
Oftentimes, our students feel like everyone is vaping and that peer pressure is hard for our students to process. In a recent survey of adolescents about a quarter of teens reported using or trying vapes. It is helpful for our children to hear that not everyone is trying vapes and to plan an exit strategy if they are ever offered a vape to try.
Even the occasional use of a vape still exposes users to nicotine which can eventually lead to nicotine addiction. Symptoms of nicotine addiction include headaches, trouble sleeping, and irritability.
When students are caught in possession of a vape and/or using a vape or e-cigarette at school they will be suspended and potentially receive a citation from law enforcement. We need your help in having conversations with your students about the harmful effects of vaping.
Please feel free to reach out to your student's medical doctor or school counselor for resources if you are concerned about your student and the use of vapes.
Band Concert
Our middle school band students have been practicing, learning, and are ready to make beautiful music. Our spring concert will take place the evening of Tuesday March 12th in the Elton Gregory downstairs gym. Due to limited space in our gym our concert will be split into a sixth grade concert followed by a 7th and 8th grade concert.
6th graders should arrive at 6pm and go to the band room. 6th grade families can make their way to the gym to find a seat at that time. 6th graders will perform at 6:20pm. After the 6th graders perform, families will meet their band student in our school cafeteria.
The 7th and 8th graders should arrive at 6:40pm and go to the band room. At this time the 7th and 8th grade families will line up in the hallway outside the gym for your student’s performance. Once the 6th grade performance is done and those families have left the gym you will be let in to find a seat. The 7th & 8th grade concert will begin at 7 pm.
We are looking forward to sharing all the progress students have made in band so far this year, they have done amazing! We hope to see you there!
