School wide safety drills
The OASD and Park Lawn believe that school safety is paramount to all we do. All of our staff are annually trained in ALICE; we have included detailed information and a link if your family would like to learn more about ALICE. We make every effort to support students in understanding the need to practice intruder drills in age appropriate ways that do not evoke a sense of fear but rather a sense of importance. We want the children to know that while a dangerous situation may feel like they do not have any control, there are strategies such as barricading and locking down and evacuating that can save their lives. Over the course of the next two week we will be reviewing strategies such as those referenced above. In addition we will facilitate a mock simulation of an unsafe person in the building and the need to make split second decisions of whether to evacuate or lock-down and barricade. Again, we invite you to follow the link below to the ALICE website for more information and have included a link to a picture book we reference as we work with the children to prepare.

FAMILY READ IN
We will be holding a "Family Read-In" that will kick off later this month, and run for part of March. The goal will be to encourage families to read a book together and there will be many discussions, activities, and fun to go along with it. Our goal now is to pick a book and gauge the level of interest from our PKL families. Please complete this short survey only if you plan on participating so we know how many books to order. Trailers/summaries of the books as well as the survey are listed below. Thank you!

Wishtree by Katherine Applegate
Summary: Red is an oak tree who is many rings old. Red is the neighborhood "wishtree"—people write their wishes on pieces of cloth and tie them to Red's branches. Along with his crow friend Bongo and other animals who seek refuge in Red's hollows, this "wishtree" watches over the neighborhood. You might say Red has seen it all. Until a new family moves in. Not everyone is welcoming, and Red's experiences as a wishtree are more important than ever. Someone has carved the word LEAVE on his trunk; a message meant for the newest Muslim family that has just moved in. Red believes if he can help build a friendship between Samar, and a boy from her school that lives next door, he can bring the neighborhood together. Through the eyes of Red and his animal friends the community comes together by realizing who you are should never be a barrier to being included.
The Wild Robot by Peter Brown
Summary: The Wild Robot is the story of Rozzum unit 7134, a robot who wakes up for the very first time to find that she’s alone on a remote, wild island. Roz doesn’t know how she got there, or where she came from: she only knows that she wants to stay alive. And by robotically studying her environment she learns everything she needs to know. She learns how to move through the wilderness, how to avoid danger, she even learns how to communicate with the animals. But the most important lesson Roz learns is that kindness can be a survival skill. And she uses kindness to develop friends and a family and a peaceful life for herself. Until her mysterious past catches up with her.
