Dear Lincoln, Logan & McPherson County 4-H Families,
I can't believe January is almost over! 4-H council and extension office staff have been busy already with fair preparations. Please welcome these new 4-H council members: Makynzi Smith, Lane Foote, Story Rasby, Keaton Fattig, Chase Martin, Ben Ebmeier and Hannah Uecker. Congratulations! Here are some items to pay attention to in this edition of the newsletter

- February is 4-H month. Mark your calendars and make plans to celebrate! See below for information.
- 4-H Open house will be February 19th from 3-5 at the Lincoln County fairgrounds

2023 Lincoln & Logan County Pig Lottery
The Pig Lottery will be extended to Logan County 4-Her's this year. The non-refundable deposit of $75 is due March 1st to the Extension Office. Youth must be enrolled in 4-H to participate in this opportunity and complete a YQCA training.
For any 4-Her's (e.g. live in town) that do not have a place to house a pig, there will be limited first come/first serve spots to board the pig until fair. Youth must care for the pig each day and provide all needed expenses for it. Contact the Extension Office for more details.
There will be 3 meetings held this year at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds with the first being April 2nd at 2 p.m. (plan on taking the pig home this day). The 2nd meeting will be in May and the 3rd meeting will be in June. Youth must attend 2 out of the 3 for the meeting points.

The Jarvis Memorial Scholarship
The Jarvis Memorial Scholarship for female 4-H High School Seniors.
The intent of the scholarship is to assist women who live 3 or more hours drive from Lincoln, but wish to attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Applicant must reside in Love Memorial Cooperative Residence Hall on East Campus.
Application deadline: Must be postmarked by MARCH 15, 2023

2023 Special Agronomy Project
Nebraska 4-H Horse Judging School
The annual Nebraska 4-H Horse Judging School is coming up on Saturday, February 25. All horse show judges, aspiring judges, judging team coaches, and youth are invited to learn about Hunter Under Saddle, Horsemanship, Reining, and 4-H Horse Show Rules and Guidelines. 2023 State Fair Updates
New in 2023! All members who were at least 9 years of age on January 1 will be eligible to participate in 4-H in-person events (live animal shows, fashion shows, and contests) at the Nebraska State Fair. Also new for this year, all livestock in contention to exhibit at the Nebraska State Fair will be required to submit a DNA nomination. This includes all breeding livestock, market livestock, and feeder calves. For more information, visit 4h.unl.edu/state-fair.

Mark your calendars and make plans to celebrate 4-H Month this February! Wear your favorite 4-H shirt on Tuesday, February 7. Put your hands to larger service on Saturday, February 11, or Sunday, February 12. Show our 4-H volunteers some love on Tuesday, February 14. Thank our donors or sponsors on Tuesday, February 21. And don’t forget to show our local 4-H professionals some appreciation on February 28.
Virtual Companion Animal Challenge
Mark your calendars! The Nebraska 4-H Virtual Companion Animal Challenge entries are due by Saturday, April 1. Essay, art, photography, and demonstration entries must be submitted digitally within the entry form, and the online trivia contest will be open from Monday, April 10, through Sunday, April 16. Horse Stampede
The Nebraska 4-H Horse Stampede will be held Saturday, March 25, in Lincoln. This event features a variety of horse contests that do not require live animals, including public speaking, demonstration, quiz bowl, art, and photography. Registration is due by Monday, March 6. Ag Innovators
Nebraska 4-H is still accepting applications for teens interested in facilitating the Ag Innovators Experience in their local communities. The 2023 Ag Innovators Experience, Aerial Ag Challenge, engages participants in modeling a sprayer drone’s flight path, based on drone collected images and environmental conditions, using line-following bot technology. Teen facilitator applications are due Wednesday, March 1, and a facilitator training will be held on Saturday, March 11 in Grand Island. Learn more and apply at 4h.unl.edu/aie.

We are excited to announce that entries are officially open for the 2023 Nebraska Cattleman's Classic Youth Livestock Judging Contest. Entries must be submitted by Feb. 5th and this year's contest will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18th . Per usual, the contest will be held at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds there in Kearney, NE and check-in will open at 7am with the contest beginning promptly at 8am. We look forward to another great contest with an outstanding awards dinner and banquet to follow!

Post Drought Meeting for the Sandhills in Arthur February 1
Post Drought Meeting for the Sandhills will be held at the Arthur County Fairgrounds February 1st with a social beginning at 5:30 p.m., meal at 6:00 p.m. and the program starting at 6:30 p.m. The program is being sponsored by Zoetis, Nebraska Cattlemen, and Nebraska Extension. There is no cost to attend the program, but you must register by January 23rd to make sure we have enough food. You may register by calling (308) 532-2683 or emailing rsaner2@unl.edu and Travis Wenzel at (308) 280-0238.
The program topics and speakers are:

Lincoln County Beef Fitting Contest
Lincoln County Beef Fitting Contest
1. The purpose of a fitting contest is to encourage 4-H member teamwork while enhancing the animal fitting skills of the team members. Each fitting team provides their own grooming equipment and supplies.
2. The fitting contest is for fun and educational! One overall winning team will be selected as the Fitting Contest Winners and will receive recognition in the form of a prize.
3. Teams will consist of (3) 4-H members. Every team must have at least one Junior Member (4-H age 8-11) and maximum of one Senior Member (4-H age 14-18). Up to 2 intermediates (4-H age 12-13) may also be on a team.
4. All Lincoln County 4-Her’s are welcome to participate. Fitting team members must be officially enrolled in the Lincoln County 4-H Program by June 15.
5. Teams will provide their own beef animal for the contest. All beef will be washed and dried prior to the contest starting.
6. All beef teams must use an animal entered in the Beef Show.
7. Have your supplies and chute in the arena prior to the start of the contest. Once the contest starts, you may not leave the arena.
8. Absolutely no coaching from spectators.
9. NO adults will be allowed in the arena during the contest except for the Judge, Superintendents, and Extension Staff.
10. Beef teams will have 30 minutes to finish.
11. Beef will be judged on:
a. Ability to fit the animal/fitting techniques (within a limited timeframe)
b. Organization of supplies and equipment
c. Participation of each team member (teamwork and safety)
d. If you finish on time
e. Overall effect/final fitting results
12. All teams must register by July 7 at 5:00 pm. Registration forms will be available to the Extension Office, or https://extension.unl.edu/Beef%20Fitting%20Registration%202023.pdf
13. Any team/individual found to be interfering with or intentionally hampering another team will be asked to leave the contest.
14. The Nebraska 4-H Code of Conduct is to be followed at all times.
